Did anyone know that the SVX was the official pace car for the 91 Indy car season. I never realized that an older Subaru was in the spotlight for a while :o

The svx is a pretty cool looking car I think. I came across a page once that had all kinds of body kits and stuff for those cars. Some looked pretty sweet I have to say. They also had a turbo kit for that six cylinder engine it has, but he boost could only go to like 4 pounds cause the engine couldn't take much more. haha

Cool info. Heinous paint, even more heinous rims. I like some of the SVX's. There's a red one around here that's in really good condition and it looks cool as hell (if you're a Suby nut )

I didn't realize that the svx was so heavy, it's like 3600 pounds!

3600 pounds and tons of torque on a 4eat equal more dead transmissions that you can shake a stick at!

How much torque did they have?? Did anyone ever put in one of our motors into those cars?

Oh by the way, A guy I know recently traded a his 22T for the RA 2.0 engine. He said he didn't like it as much. He felt that you could tell the difference in low end right away between the two engines. I don't know if he was using their computer or not, I'd guess he'd have to be.

A guy here in Denver put an SVX 3.3 H6 in a Legacy once. They also supercharged one. There was a company in Oregon that made a 5 speed conversion kit for them. If I had a long highway commute to work each day that is the car I would drive. They are one of my favorite cars to ride in on the highway. Good top end power and very comfortable. Plus the funky windows allow you to roll them down without getting all windblown.

The SVX is a sweet car. I've got a poster with that PPG pace car. Paint job nice, you ever seen a ppg pace car paint job? Absolutely beautiful.

Rims are stock, they just painted them.

The SVX a little heavy, but the engine is a monster.

240 hp

230 lbft of torque.

that's good for a 3.3 liter engine by today's standards. it had a bunch of cool engine technologies that are still considered pretty advanced. variable length intake runners and the like. tuners don't like the car much. it's so well tuned from the factory that aftermarket bits don't help much. the intake is wide and has nice easy turns. the exhaust flows freely enough that the only upgrades people do are for sound. nitrous is popular though. 85-100 shots aren't uncommon. you just don't feel 5-7 hp mods on a car with all that power to begin with.

stock for stock the 0-60 might not be as quick as a WRX, but get the thing to 80, and the WRX will never see it again. it's definitely a highway car. and I want one :D

the 2 chronic problems were teh tranny and the rear wheel bearings. the rear bearings were just too small and didn't seal up as well as they should have. it can't be tossed around like an impreza or a legacy. the tranny is basically the same one that's in our legacies and in imprezas. no additional cooling for all the extra torque. that was the whole issue. they'd die of overheating in abou 2-3 years. any svx owner that knows what they're doing throws on a tranny cooler first thing, and prolly a temp gauge as well. as long as you have sufficient cooling, the trannys will last forever, just like any other subaru.

Yeah I had a pop mechanics test where they tested the SVX against the probe and other cars of it's like during that time frame, and the 0-60 was not real good and all that stuff, but the 40-70 mph test it blew away the nearest competitor by like 2-3 seconds!

The car is definitely built to be a cruiser/highway car. The drag coefficient is excellant. The car will do 160. We were doing a 140 in my buddy's SVX in memphis. He had suspension stuff done, & wheels, and had a true dual exhaust put on. it was a little higher note then the normal boxer sound, but it sounded pretty good, almost race-carish. I don't know if there was an equalizer pipe in-between, but I think that might have helped, and made the sound better.

any way to bring the weight down?
woohoo, 100th post

yeah. the top speed on the '92 was listed at 155. stock. all later years were limited to 143 IIRC.

there's a couple hundred pounds of weight you can kill. thrunk reinforcement (those criss-crossy bits welded against the skin metal of the trunk). door guts. sound deadening tar. bumper beams if you've got a death wish. but there's stuff you can remove.

My brother-in-law had a 92 and he had a shop do straight pipes on it. No muffler, No cats. The stock exhaust had three cats on it. His was super loud. It felt faster with no exhaust restriction but not sure if it was a true increase or due to the increase in sound. That can make a car feel faster eh. Regularily hit 150+ on the interstates in Wyoming.
