Why can't you use one starter for both tranny's?

Does anyone know why you can't use an auto starter for a manual transmission or vice versa?

My guess would be that they just don't fit right.

The 5MT starter gear engages the teeth on the outside rim of the flywheel. The 4EAT starter gear engages teeth on the torque converter, right?

The toothed wheel portion is probably just at a different fore-aft position.

I don't remember exactly HOW it didn't fit, but it didn't, so i spent hours calling around and getting sky-high prices for new ones (because apparently they last a long time). I finally found one at a pick-n-pull, and spent a few more hours getting it out :D

Subaru starters are known for their longevity. I only know of one person that's replaced one (me on my '84 wagon - $10 from the JY and 10 mins to install). The one in my Legacy is original. I've seen the manual and auto together, but I can't remember why they don't fit, now either.
