Removing fuel rails...

I'm heading back to the junkyard to cannibalize a 1990 Legacy Sedan. I also think I saw a BF in the back that might still have the engine.
I had a few questions.
A) Are the 1990 Fuel Rails the same (or will bolt onto) a 94 SS?
B) How do you remove the fuel rails? Any special steps?
The junkyard out here is pretty much dirt cheap, so I doubt the rails would be expensive, and they'd work for larger injectors should any fit in them.
Info?

A) I believe that the 1990 fuel rails are more or less the same as the turbo ones. They're not exactly the same, because the part numbers are different, but I don't know what the precise difference is.
I don't think these particular rails will fit any injectors that your stock rails won't.
B) They're fairly easy to get off. On the driver's side, undo the two 8mm-head bolts on the flange on each end of the rails. Undo the two 12mm-head (I think) bolts holding the rail to the manifold, and then it should just lift off. If the injectors are still in there you may have to very gently pry at first, and of course disconnect the harness connectors.
On the passenger side, it's the same on the front end but on the rear end the fuel pressure regulator is installed. It's easiest to remove the FPR and rail together; disconnect the two hoses (vacuum and fuel) from the FPR and then it's pretty much the same thing.

Phil- if you're going to get N/A fuel rails in hope of getting bigger injectors you need to get 92-94 N/A fuel rails. Nismo makes injectors that look to fit these rails. They offer 525cc and 740 cc IIRC but they are UBER expensive (around $800 for a set of 4). Vikash found that the 92-94 N/A injectors also have a removeable cap that when removed allows for higher fuel flow. This is untested so far though. I'd hold off and wait until a set of these modded N/A injectors can be flow tested.

Big thing you'll need to look at is the type of injectors mt/at.
The 90-91 rails had the injectors tilting inward slightly. Which is no big deal, but the injectors themself are different from the 92-94 injectors. So the spots for all the gaskets to sit are probably different.
I'm not sure which injectors the turbo ones are similar to. If they're like the 92-94 n/a's then the 90-91 rails will probably not work.

90-91 automatics had pintle-type injectors that look something like this:
90-91 manuals and all turbos had ball-type injectors that look something like this:
92-94s had pintle-type injectors that look something like this:
(These are all actually pictures of Nissan injectors, so the colors and electrical connectors might not look the same as Subaru ones.)
All 90-91s had the same type of fuel rail. All 92-94 non-turbos had the same type of fuel rail. However, 92-94 turbos had a different fuel rail part number from 91 turbos. I don't know what the difference is.
92-94 injectors do appear to be modifiable, and I have a set that I have modified but not yet tested. In order to use them on a turbo you have to use the 92-94 non-turbo rails.
There are some aftermarket high-flow injectors for Nissans that appear to have the same fitment as the 92-94 pintle injectors. Again, these would require using the 92-94 non-turbo rails. I don't know whether there are any aftermarket high-flow injectors in either of the early shapes.
It may be possible to modify the early non-turbo pintle injector to flow more, and then use the stock turbo fuel rail. I haven't seen an early pintle injector up close.

Well the BC at the junkyard was a 1990 Automatic.
I'll pull an injector for you and you can check it out.

Cool. It'd be interesting to take a look at.

At a junkyard earlier today on an un-Subaru-related trip, I saw my first junkyard Legacy. No idea what year but it was a Legacy wagon L - I'm thinking FWD, obviously no turbo. Is this a possibility for grabbing the fuel rail to accept some nissan injectors for my '94 turbo? Should I jump on that?
V... would you like me to grab the injectors for you to look at? Or at least send you a photo of?

You should be able to determine with a little inspection whether it's pre- or post-facelift... also, the VIN contains the model year.
If it's post-facelift then its rails should accept Nissan injectors.
I'm not particularly interested in taking a look at the injectors, but it might be helpful if you could just look at them and either add information or confirm or refute what I wrote above.

You can always look on the car information panel on the driver's side door jam.

I can go back this next Sunday and check but I need to ask first - "pre or post facelift"? You're talkin jive to a new Scooby modder

Do you mean, check to see if its a 1992,93,or 94 model before going through the trouble to remove the rail?
And my god... the door sticker tells all. Genius, man!

Yeah, post facelift is 92-94

Thanks... OK I'll go see if that things post-facelift and, if its got the fuel rail and injectors I'll pull them for examination. That junkyard's been pretty good to me so far, unfortunately thats the only Legacy or even Subaru I've seen there.
If anyone can think of something for me to look for on that wagon when I go, let me know before Sunday, I'm willing to pull parts to ship and help someone else out...

If modding the '92-'94 n/a injectors works, I have a '94 n/a wagon that I can swap rails and injectors with......
Someone get those injectors tested already.

...well what the hell, if you've GOT them why dont YOU test them already?

I have no clue how to mod them, and don't want to risk messing up a perfectly good set of injectors if it doesn't work (the '94 is my brother's daily driver).

oh... good reason

I modded them with a Dremel and a 0.025" cut-off wheel.
But if your brother needs the injectors for his car to work, you can't mod and test them anyway.

V... what exactly did you remove with the dremel? Shaving off from the end? Is there some sort of taper there that decreases flow that you're just removing?
Damn I've got a lot of questions

If you look carefully you can see that the four holes at the tip of the injector are actually holes in a cover plate that has been welded on. I cut off this cover plate, revealing the bare pintle nozzle underneath.

OK I'm a bit confused here... that Legacy Wagon that is at the junkyard, I called the guy and asked what year it was. He said, "1986."
umm... did I miss something here? Did Legacy's even exist in 1986??
Sure didn't look like a car from the 80's...

You're right. You've somehow managed to find the rare beast known as the auto parts retailer who doesn't know squat about what he's selling!
A quick way to ID the 92-94 NA injectors is that they are mounted with their electrical connectors perpendicular to the fuel rails. The 90-91 NA and 91-94 turbo injectors are mounted with their electrical connectors at 45-degree angles to the rails.

Thanks once again VRG... lol... I thought he was talking out of his ass. 1986... psh! No wait, theres no turbo. No psh.
Thats another good way to tell the years apart. I am going to have to go have a look-see myself and inform him this car simply didn't exist in the '80s. What did Subaru have back then, the Justy?

I dont believe the justy came along until the late 80's. It's probbly a dl or gl or gl-10
