Who collects car models?

Collecting 1:18th-scale preassembled car models has been one of my favorite hobbies since I was 10 years old. It all started when I bought a Mustang Mach III model on a trip in NC. I bought it as a toy, and pretty much destroyed it. I have done that with a couple models, thankfully I didn't ruin any real special ones until I matured enough to take care of them.

I have some very rare models in my collection, such as a yellow Acura NSX, they don't make yellow ones anymore. I have a McLaren F1 GTR, I have a TVR Speed 12. Some other rare ones: BMW 2002 Turbo, Peugeot 406, Lancia Stratos, Ford Escort Cosworth, Dodge Copperhead Concept Car, Peugoet 206 cc, Opel Speedster, Triumph Spitfire, and others.

I have 3 Subarus: a 22B, a WRX Type RA 4-door (white w/gold wheels), and a WRX Type R (yellow w/ black wheels).

I posted this because I found my unicorn tonight. My favorite movie of all time is Christine, the 58 Plymouth that goes around killing everybody, and while I was in the grocery store of all places :!:, I saw a model display and just sitting there was a red 58 Plymouth Fury for $14.99. I had to get it, it's already in my living room on display :D

To find models like this, just keep your eyes peeled. I got the 2002 Turbo at half price from a closing toy store in the mall, got my Opel Speedster from Sam's Club, and a LOT of my models have come from www.exoticar.com since they have the largest selection of anyone in the US.

Who else collects car memorabilia like this?

Agh. . . the "C word"

I used to "c" things like that a while back, but I've gotten to a point in my life where I can't to own things that I don't use. . .

. . . . so, I don't have much stuff like that, anymore. ;)

I've also been periodically acquiring 1:18 and some 1:24 scale cars. I might have about 40 1:18s Found a model 1970 240Z in white like my first car, so that was great. I mostly only get AutoArt now as the quality is great for the price. My rarest is likely my 1:24 1967 Cadillac hearse like one I almost bought and a BRE 240Z my ex brought back from Japan.

My favorites: Panoz GTR street car; Jag XKSS, C-Type; Chaparral 2C; 1968 Dodge Charger; two generation Impreza rally cars; TVR Speed 12; Mercedes C111; and an old Bburago Mercedes-SSK that I modified fo more realism and to look like one I saw at a concours.

My neighbor has a shit ton of models. Probably close to 40.

I want a 22B, and a BC5. But I am a stickler for details, so if it's not perfect, I don't want it.

Agreed. All my Subaru models are AutoArt, I have a Lancer Evo VI that's AutoArt, and a couple others. I can read Subaru on the brake calipers on my WRX Type R, and STi and BBS on the center caps on the 22B.

I used to buy a lot of Maisto models, because they're the easiest to find, and their quality is still pretty good. But the quality-price ratio is indeed most favorable for AutoArt.

I have about 40 1:18th models now, my friend is trying to compete with me and he's actually ahead a bit. But I have more rare ones, and my collection is easily worth more. The one model he has that I envy is his $80 E30 M3. That is THE most detailed and well-put-together model I have ever seen. There isn't just a panel under the hood that looks like an engine, there is actually a preassembled replica of the engine placed in the model.

Well, I got around to organizing all my models, taking pictures of them, and documenting them, so I thought I'd resurrect this thread.

I've got a few interesting stories behind these models, such as the MR2 Spyder that I bought for literally 2 cents (bought it from my Toyota dealership, glitch in the part number system), or the McLaren F1 GTR, which replaced the F1 LM Edition that I had, but kamikaze'ed off my old stereo speaker and almost hit me in the head, or the Saleen S7 that I must have ordered when I was drunk or something, because I don't remember ordering it, it just showed up at my house, with the invoice billed out to my credit card...

Anyway, here they all are, click pics to enlarge:

I dont really collect models anymore, though I used to build a lot of WWII airplanes. had a couple spitfires, B-17, some messerschmits, etc. I want to get back into it, but its just more stuff, time, and money. Ive got too many hobbies as it is.

I used to make little car models all the time back in highschool. I had a badass hemicuda, '69 camaro z28, and a bunch of other stuff but those are the only two i have left. Used to do airplanes and helicopters too.
