tranny woes...

Well I finally got it in, but now it wont move. The car moves fine in reverse, and in 5th, but in all other gears its no go. in 2nd I can feel it start to move, then it grinds. First is also a lot more mushy than the rest of the gears. So do I need another new tranny or is there something simple I'm missing?

more info:
trans wont shift into 1st at all
you can shift straight into 3rd and 4th with the car running and the clutch fully released

sounds like there is not enough space between the pressure plate and flywheel. Either there is a contaminant in there that is keeping both spinning or the adjustment isn't allowing them to seperate enough.

This happened to me when i got a bur on my pressure plate. oh wait, you said clutch fully released.... sounds like the clutch is gone. man, your symptoms are all whacked out. the whole car will move with 2nd engaged or the stick will start to move into the 2nd gear position and then starts to grind?

the whole car strts to move then it grinds and pops out if gear. The clutch was brand new. What do you mean the adjustment? The clutch fork? that's a possibility, hopefully that's the problem. Why would reverse and 5th still work though? I don't fully understand manual trannies enough to make an educated guess.

Sounds like a bad transmission or the shift linkage is completely messed up. Did it shift before installation? Not that that is a perfect means of checking. I'd bet more that it's the linkage. are the bushings replaced? Is there something that's catching on it?

I have no idea the condition of the tranny prior to installation. Hopefully it's the linkage, I'll take a look at it tomorrow. The linkage worked alright on the car i got it from. Maybe I installed it improperly or something. I'll sleep on it, cause im hella tired, but thanks everyone for the comments.

Augh, sorry it didn't just work, Hardy...

If it behaves the same with respect to 3rd and 4th, and behaves the same with respect to 1st and 2nd, and behaves the same with respect to 5th and reverse, I've gotta believe it to be a shifter issue of some kind.

Before you put the transmission in the car were you able to verify that you could shift it into each of the gears?

well it doesn't behave the same in 1st and 2nd, 1st wont go in and 2nd sort of does. Though I guess that could be the same thing. I couldn't check the tranny to see if it would shift into each gear before I put it in. I tried to but didn't know what I was doing. when you say a shifter issue are you thinking internal? like the shift forks, or are you thinking external like the shift linkage?

are there any adjustments one can do to the shiftforks with the tranny still attached?

Can you double clutch into the gears? Like rev in neutral, clutch in, shift?

A few blown synchros would do everything you are saying. Reverse shares a synchro with 5th, so that makes sense.

I'd say pull the tranny, crack it open and see what's up?

well, the trans is back at the mechanic. He's going to be rebuilding it, so that's good. At least this time when I took it out it only took me 4 hrs to do it total, as compared to the 2days or so the first time.

OKay here's the scoop. Last night the mechanic called me up to tell me the status of the tranny. He said once he opened it up he could see the shift fork for 3-4 was broke off and jammed into part of the trans case and the shift fork for 1-2 which is why 1 wasnt engaging and 2 was barely. Other than that the tranny looked like it was in excelent condition. Almost all the gears had no scratches, all the bearings were good. He said someting about the awd portion was messed up though. It was a good tranny, aside from those things. So he looked around and found an old rs tranny he had and let me take that (pretty good deal for 250 eh :)) anyway, so I got that all together today, and started driving it. Man what a difference. I dunno if it was because my old tranny was in such bad shape or because this is still pretty new but i can definately tell a difference. A few things though, I'm assuming it's my inability to drive a clutch correctly or something but when ever i upshift the car jerks a lot. I also notice it when I let off the gas or press on it while coasting. Could this actually be related to the ecu? I'm still using the 4eat JECS ecu because the hitachi 5mt maf i bought was no good and the hitachi ecu doesn't like the JECS IAC valve. The ecu threw codes for both of those and it wasnt running well at all. Wouldn't idle at all. I'm also noticing a grinding noise that is related to speed. I'm thinking it's one of two things. Either the driveshaft is coming into contact with the exhaust and scraping on it (I don't have the middle support bracket for the exhaust that attaches to the tranny. Or the metal part of the outer cv boot that forms a seal with the wheelbearing/hub/knuckle whatever that area is is grinding. I noticed that they were a little dented in on both halfshafts.

Isn't that what subyluvr was complaining of in his jerky throttle post?

As far as I know it is normal, but can be made worse by inexperienced shifting and also shifting at low speeds....

you are just used to a giant rubber band between your flywheel and driveshaft. blipping the throttle while coasting will make the car jump. you need a more sensitive gas pedal foot... no more just mashing to go.

hmm very true. However, this is really bad jerking. maybe it's just the way subaru 5mt's are or something but it really seems like its doin too much. It's a lot different from any other car I've driven. I am however going to take your word for it that it's normal and learn how to drive better :)

check your engine mounts, tranny mount, and your rear pumpkin mount. it could be in any of those.
