ok as the subject says, am i crazy? I've kind of been looking around lately for a new car, so today my girlfriend and i were looking around at the dealers. And there's a 2000 jeep wrangler sahara that i really like. The only catch is id have to trade the leg in on it and sell the prelude. If insurance wasnt too much i'd probably get an old beater, maybe and old subaru or somethin. But anyways do you think im crazy for wanting to do this? Heres the jeep. And they marked it down to 16,000. Let me know what yall think.

Sell the Prelude and the Camry and do a 5MT swap into the Legacy.

If you want to trail run the Jeep, that's awesome. For a daily driver, you are giving up a LOT for very little. The soft-tops are almost unberable on the highway and in the winter or rain. The Hardtops aren't fun in the summer.

They are fun though, I love Jeeps and always have. One of these days, I'll be able to afford a Platinum Gray 1998 5.9L Grand Cherokee. I would have almost been able to afford it had I spent the money spent on the 94 (coming damn near $7k now). Mmmm 345lb-ft of torque

I've known a few people with Grand Cherokee V8s and they had nothing but problems, strange ones at that, like accessory brackets breaking. I've heard the I6s are much better.

The guy upstairs from me has a Wrangler he's getting a snorkel kit for. He loves it, but bought an Expedition for everyday use since he said pretty much what Phil said.

I'd love to take the body off one and build a completely custom vehicle out of it. Still haven't finalized my ideas on it, though.

5mt is fun but not a must. Keep the legacy, I wouldn't buy the jeep but I dont care for american cars at all. :)

Steve - A well maintained V8 won't have many problems. A poorly maintained V8 is going to break every bracket under the hood. If you mud, and don't clean, that's where you get into trouble.

Gotta get the 5.9 though. The 5.2's are fun, but not like the 5.9. They actually get worse gas mileage than my SS at the moment (around 13 in the city compared to my SS's 16.5).

I'd never get the I6 Grand Cherokee. That's 4000 pounds of SUV, the I6 runs out of highway steam.

kelly blue book says that thing shouldn't be worth more than 15k. and don't forget that it will be worth 7-8k after a year or two.... i couldn't even stand thinking about spending that kind of money. err, makes me shudder. i think you would be better off buying an older one personally, but that's just me. you might spend 4k in repairs, but you don't lose 8k in value.

I guess I was more talking about the regular Cherokee with the I6 in terms of preference.

The people I knew with the Grand problems had were yuppie-types (no offroading) with vehicles under 4 yrs old. All the off-roaders I met with Jeeps were old CJs, Wranglers, or Cherokees and I knew a guy with an old Wagoneer (I think) that had some rediculous amount of abuse it withstood.

I'd also go for and older one with some popular mods for cheaper money. If you're gonna have a toy, might as well do it right, in my opinion.

The I6 is bulletproof (as all I6's are, bulletproofness is inherent to their design). The things that break are usually suspension related (that I've seen anyway). I almost bought a toy XJ with 276k on the clock. I still kinda wished I had gotten it, but that would have been a LOT of money that the SS wouldn't have gotten then.

I used to have a 93 Grand Cherokee. Really nice looking (I had great rims on it), but it was, hands down, the biggest piece of fucking garbage I've ever owned.
Apparently, this is par for the course among most of the people I know who have either owned them, or know other people that have owned them.
Typical Chrysler leftovers.... junk.
High on style, low on reliabilty. OMFG, and talk about expensive to fix?! I actually had to have pieces custom fucking fabricated once.
Needless to say, I'll never, ever, under any circumstances own a Jeep product again. They score consistenly poorly in Consumer Reports (this is for, like, 15 years running) and have terrible track records.
That said, I dig the old CJ5's. At least back then they actually made a decent product.
I've alway's an International Scout too though... Anyone ever own one?
I figure they'd be pretty cake to work on; parts may be a triffle hard to find/buy, but I know of two in a local salvage yard that are going to glory... maybe I could rescue 'em?

A friend's father in high school had an International Scout, sort of red with a white top, in his yard along with 20 other cars that were basket cases. He even had a hemi just sinking into the ground outside. This guy was a real nut job. And the property he sat on was/is extremely valuable in an upscale part of the town. It was like Beverly Hillbillies over there. The Scout was cool, though, and probably wouldn't have taken much to get on the road.

Well I did it, Traded in the honda and the subaru for the jeep. So I guess that makes me no longer one of you. But hopefully I will be soon, because I'm gonna look for something as a beater and I want a subaru. Not sure what it all depends on what I can find and how much money I have.
