when i was going back from the store. i saw a old ford mustang that had one of the boss engines in it so i was like just messing around and reving my engine. i thought he really wanted to race me lol. anyways he didnt but the next stop light i just wanted to redline each gear but this one red jeep charokee passed me and hit the hazard lights and i was like oh hell no then the next stop light i punched it i was ahead of her but it didnt wanna shift in second gear and she flashed her hazards again lol so next light we went off at it again but she rolled off the start while i was at a dead stop i was like wtf but she wasnt even a car length ahead of me and flashed the hazards again then we did it again and she was like u aint got nothing on this but i know i could beat the 4.0s tho because i did when i was going to school because i needed to get in the next lane and my friend thought it would of been funny if she kept up with me and miss school but thats how i know i could of beaten that girl in the jeep lol anyways it was fun

PUNCTUATION. Dear god. Make people want to read your posts by using simple keys, like the comma key, the period key, the exclamation point key, even the colon or semi-colon.

It better be darn exciting to deserve an exclamation point tho...

That never stopped me, but I just don't care enough.

I guess we can't all be writers ... or even articulate. I don't understand that people care enough to want to communicate something, but not enough to actually get their point across correctly, so what have they communictaed? What was the point of their correspondance? Do people talk like they write?

Stepping back on the evolutionary chart.

Sometimes I talk how I write and somtimes it's even worse. Most of the time I write how I talk minus the expletives for the most part. Is everyone totally confused yet? But if I were to talk how I write in the extreme then I guess I'd see everything in black and white.

Ok, we could get back to the thread now...or not.

I forgot, what was the point of this thread in the first place?

he "lost" to a cherokee 3 times

A stock 4.0L HO Cherokee with a 5MT will be faster than a stock Turbo Legacy, off the line.

Cherokees make something stupid like 90% of their torque at idle. A good launch, and a Cherokee will have a Turbo Legacy probably through the 1/8th mile. The 4.0, however, is far from a high-revving beast, so everything sort of tapers off in the tall end of things. On the highway, the Jeep doesn't have a chance. Stoplight to stoplight, you had better stage the light and prep for a GOOD launch.

Oh, and if she beat you from a roll (aka street-start), then she would have beaten you from a standstill. Look at the car mags, the street start (5mph to 60mph) is always significantly slower than the actual launch start.

Laurel, you seem to be slipping a bit lately. You didn't punctuate that last post, and you didn't capitalize either.

I'd bet an EA81 would beat a Legacy off the line, too. Peak torque @ 2400 - 90lbs/ft. Not much would beat that car off the line with an auto. After forty feet or so is another story, but that's why low-end torque is so much fun and makes a car more driveable.

I don't know about that. By 2400 rpm i was making around 115 lb-ft atw

An EA-81 can do a true 4-wheel drive launch, though. So the first 20-30 feet belongs to the EA. :) Hmmph, make that the first 10 feet or so. I just remembered what my Legacy is like launching with one of the front tires squealing away (when dry, add any moisture and the Potenza RE-730's let the back end out).

And the argument point is moot. He drives an LS. Peak torque by 4000 rpm.

4wd launch isn't going to help or hurt if the other car isn't spinning tires during it's false awd launch. Under a very specific set of conditions, maybe it would pull ahead almost (car, weather, tires, driver, tranny)

I don't need to turn this into a thread arguing about the EA81's, but they also had about 600lbs less weight than the Legacy to haul around. Comparing to an N/A Legacy I think with a good launch the EA81 with its lower gearing would hold it until about 25 mph.

And some day I may own another ...

Yea, no way in hell a Legacy LS would beat a Cherokee. The XJ has the weight advantage (sort of, 3300 pound curb), and power advantage (190hp @ 4600 and 225lb-ft @ 3000).

An EA81 has every right to keep up with, if not beat, a Legacy for the first 30 feet. Lest we forget, gentlemen, our 16 valve heads ultimately do not provide optimal low-end torque. Below 3000rpm, those extra 8 valves are just more work the camshaft has to do. Plus we still have two cams, for each head. An EA81 not only has 2 valves per cylinder, but only has one cam gear-driven by the crank. That means one less cam and one less timing belt to turn, and 8 less valves to open.

That's why the torque peak is at 2400rpm as Steve said. As Steve said again though, above 5000rpm, the valvetrain just doesn't flow enough for big HP peaks, so once an EA81 is moving, it's downright slow. A Legacy would trounce it.

The Legacy would feel much faster as a highway car, but the EA81 would feel faster as an in-town car.

How is 3300 lbs a weight advantage, His LS has a curb of 2980. That's almost 400 lbs less

Also about the xj making most of its power low being silly, I think it's great, who wants to have to rev an engine high while climbing, which is what a jeep is for afterall

Is that true... that the LS makes it'speak HP at 4k RPM? I need to dig up some info on this...

*edit* err. I meant n/a not LS.
