Speedo troubles

So I'm driving down the road in my newly purchased '91 turbo and the speedometer shivered and then promptly died. Searching through the archives I noticed the trouble another board member had with this problem. From what I've read though it could either be a few dollars or more like $600 dollars to fix. I've talked to the previous owner and he said that the speedo cable was bent up where it connects to the tranny. Hopefully, when I check it out later it will be a disconnected cable. Any advice from those who may have gone through this already?

I hope so, Josh, and it most likely is but I'm still sweating it a little bit.
BTW, is that part common between auto and manual trannies?

hurray, I'm having speedo troubles too, but it's on the other side of the cable

I don't really know what side it's on at this point. You're swapping trannies, right thawa (sorry, forgot your name). Again, I hope it's not the tranny or even the dash. I'll see soon enough.

no the part is different between auto & MT.
The MT uses a little extender piece I believe. I haven't seen pics....just what diagram is in the parts manual.

hmm, i swapped my at speedo cable to my 5mt and it worked fine.

It's not the tranny THANK GOD!!!! I was in there checking things out and tugged on the speedo cable a little and it came free of the connector. So I guess I need a new cable. I pushed it back in and the speedo/odometer worked and there was no more cel. It makes me wonder though if the mileage is true.

Cool, that's a relief. It feels good to find the problem yourself too, doesn't it.

Hell yeah it does. I'm a pretty fair troubleshooter once I know the variables. I've never been a mechanic but since I've been focusing on it a little more recently I'm getting better. Not that pushing a cable in is a big deal. It's more laziness than aptitude that prevents me from working on my cars but you already knew that probably.
