I just got my saab 900 i/c I bought on ebay and its got what seems to be oil in it. It looks like the guy I bought it off poured some into it so it wouldn't corrode. Is this ok or should I freak out? There was actually little pools where it ran out of the inlet and outlet pipes in the packaging. Thanks

It's full of oil because it was used on a car with a closed Positive crankcase ventilation system. Take the intercooler off almost any car and you'll find it full of oil. Heck, take a look at the inside of your intake pipes after the PCV hose comes in.

It's normal. You can clean it out but it will collect again unless you install some kind of oil catch can (do a search; it's discussed in another thread).

It is harmful to intercooler efficiency, as it insulates a little bit.

Thanks for the reply. I ,like an ass, started cleaning the outside with steel wool without plugging the pipes  but caught my mistake quick. I noticed a tiny bit of wool debris just inside the pipes and wiped them out then stuffed rags in to protect the inside. because of the oil and my dumb ass with the wool, I would like to flush it out as to make sure nothing foul gets in my engine. What would be the best way to clean it out? Thanks

kerosene

diesel, i was told, is still "dirty". kerosene is really refined diesel

Why not gasoline?

You could use gasoline; it's just nastier stuff to deal with so a lot of people prefer kerosene. Bio-diesel would be great.

Either way, some dishwashing liquid would be good to get rid of the remnants.

Thanks for the suggestions all. It's cleaning up pretty nice. Can someone who has put in a saab 900 i/c tell me what all I need to start moving so it will fit. Haven't solved the piping yet but I want to start preparing for when I am ready. Thanks

I'm no kitten killer man...I did search. :) The only real info I found was about piping, not about what may need moved before install. You didn't get recruited by the search nazis did you brat...say it isn't true!

Hmmm.... I just remembering seeing about 4 different threads specifically about the 900 setup. What have you guys been talking about in there? From the pics I saw it looks like it clears the a/c line just fine, but it looks that you must take the igniter off of it's "display".
