Intermittent AC

My ac had been working ever since i got the car up uuntil about march or so this year. Then all of a sudden I turned it on and nothing but hot air, it was always cooler when using the A/C button instead of the MAX A/C. If I understand right max ac just turnsthe vents to recirculate instead of taking in fresh air. Now today I was waiting for someone and decieded to turn the ac on just for the hell of it. and it was blowing out HELLA cold, like it used it. I had the Ac blasting all the way home and nearly froze my hands thats how cold it was 
. So what does this mean? What should I check to see whats the matter with it? It shouldn't magically start blowing out hella cold air all of a sudden. Something has to be amiss, but what?
