i have a 93 5spd legacy turbo (UK) running 270bhp, just fried transmission doing standing starts.input shaft brgs i think still drive but sounds like a dog box in 1st most.
Q. is it better to fit a wrx 5spd and rear diff or get mine fixed?
cost is an issue a little but if wrx is stronger unit and gives more punchy changes due to ratio i would prefer that.

I would assume the non-US market WRX box would be very tough and likely easier to get, but being from the other side of the pond, I couldn't say for sure. They came in a variety of final drives for different versions and years both GBR and JDM spec. I could give you the ratios for nearly any Subaru Impreza Turbo/WRX gearbox, if you want.
If you had the cash, a new 6-speed would be a great answer. I read a rumor that Porsche had a hand in the 6-speed. What you give up in the 85 lbs extra weight you get back in durability and likely shorter ratios than the Legacy. Very expensive over here, though.
The 5MT is based on a design that goes back to when Subarus made well under 100 HP. I was amazed to see that the case on my Legacy looked very similar to my old '84 GL (although I'm sure the internals are a lot tougher).

tnx for reply, i have found out my local freindly subaru tuner will fit a box and axle from a '96 import wrx'. import i guess will be for far east?.
dont forget im uk, if u can give me ratios for that and my current 5spd i would be glad.
just a tip on a different subject. they fitted wrx heads in place of my legacy ones and it is well sweet. had issues with noisy lifters but proves to be a good swap.

I beleive that all 5 speeds are equal. The only changes are the ratios. Save yourself some money and grab a used 5 speed from any random subaru. Making sure of matched differential ratio of course.

Aren't WRX heads solid lifters vs. hydraulic in the Legacy?
Anyway...
I don't know what the ratios are in your car as I only have US Legacy, which may not be the same. As for Impreza...
'96 WRX, JDM - No separate listing for '96, so I assume it carries over from '92-'94 sedan (saloon): 1st (3.454), 2nd (2.062), 3rd (1.448), 4th (1.088), 5th (0.825). Final drive: through Aug '96 = 4.111, Sept '96 = 4.444.
'96 WRX Type RA, JDM: 1st (3.454), 2nd (2.333), 3rd (1.750), 4th (1.354), 5th (0.972). Final Drive = 3.900
Hope that's good.
