You mean do you have to turn them to get them to retract so you can install new pads?

You don't. Just push them in. I can usually do it just by loosening the bleeder valve and pushing hard with my thumbs.

Having had an '81, '85 and '87 prior to my Legacy Sport Sedan, boy, does that bring back memories! (If you didn't know about 'screwing the pistons back' on the older Subaru's, it was a lot of 'fun'.)

The Legacy's just push back in. I've usually used a 'C'-clamp to do it.

Thanks!

Cool. When you do, put the old brake pad between the clamp and the piston so that the clamp's hard steel surface doesn't hurt the piston.

i did my pads on my 85 and didnt turn the page on my manual when studying up on what needed to be done. needless to say i got everything apart and then turned the page. had no way to turn the damn piston in. fortunately had access to another car. it took 4 auto parts stores to get a somewhat special tool. and it was a universal one that sort of worked. man did that suck. what a stupid design. and then to have to deal w/the ebrake on the front too. what a pain. total start to finish time for left side:

4 hrs. (this includes searching around town)

total for right side:

20 minutes.

last fall i did all four corners on my 90 legacy. took half hour/45 min. tops, including clean-up. man i love my legacy.

Took almost 2 hours to do my drivers side brake pads on my SS. Wicked bitch. Ran into so many issues from stripped heads, to stuck brackets. Ugh, way to much effort required.
