Strange. I've seen Subarus that practically dump oil right on their exhaust manifolds without any such incidents...

The only thing I can think of is the tech isn't tightening the filter down, or the filter is faulty. All honda's (4 cyl) have a similar layout, where the filter is directly above the cat or something, so I can't say I doubt that the oil is burning straight onto the exhaust. I'mm with honda on this though, wwhy is it only happening on 03-04 crv's? But is oil really that volitile? Interesting.

I wonder if there's a combination of problems. Maybe 03-04 CRVs are more likely to misfire, so the cat gets really hot, so the oil falling on it really ignites instead of just smoking off.

but wouldn't there have to be a LOT of oil falling out of the engine to cause this?

Seems like it, yeah.

I thought Honda was having several problems with the CRVs. I wonder of there's a fuel leak also. I've seen plenty of cars with exhausts stained black or caked with a think layer of oil, but never seen one do anything more than look terrible by smoking.
