My rebuild is going well [vid inside]

Yup, I received all my stuff, and started the rebuilt this week-end.
I waited till being far enought to give you a little update
So this his how it goes..
All gaps were checked with Plastiguage.. amaisingly, i'm into the stock specs even without any crankshaft rework.
shortblock closed after a lot of problems finding guide-pins
all bolts torqued to specs, with some engine oil on the threads.
Pistons, pins and lock pins installed.. ahhh relief ! hehe
and the finaly assembled shortblock. Looks not pretty good especially with that rusted water-pump wheel, but in real it looks nice.. pics is bad :\ hehe i'll have to sand a little bit that wheel so rust goes away ... (that's the only pump with oil-cooler nipple i have :\ )
If i receive the guide-pins for the heads tomorrow, i'll then install the heads, water passage, maybe oil-pan too. I'll keep you updated.
All other pics, and hirez are at this url :

The crank is stock, but was balanced like all the pistons and rods.. hehe
rsstiBoy : In Quebec, with the bad weather and snow/calcium/etc... aluminium gets all eaten and looks pretty damn bad. The guys who overbored the block also cleaned it, and i painted the block to "seal" the aluminium, and prevent it to get more eaten / corroded. Also, it looks much better than it was ! hehe
humm.. look at this pic, you can see the block, and look how bad it was.. hehe

I can't believe how clean they got that engine. Beautiful. i like the black block. I'm leaving mine bare with dark red crackle intake and valve covers with the relief details bare.

+rep to Gunk + Dupli-Color engine emanel/paint
I had a little problem with the heads / head bolts...
2.2l shortblock + Legacy TT heads + WRX head bolts. :
after torque-ing the bolts to the specified 51lb-ft as in the WRX shop manual (step 2), the exaust-side head bolts were still slack ! like if the bolts were toooo longs, and was hitting the bottom of the fillets in the block.
Solution : i'll have to cut the head bolts 0.5-1cm shorter and reinstall them in the holes. Not soooo bad but.. annoying. hehe

Morgie, refresh my memory. You're building an EJ22G block with EJ20 DOHC heads right?
Posted: Fri Jul 23, 2004 3:19 am
by morgie
Suby : Yup, 2.2l turbo shortblock with custom internals, the heads come from a 2.0l twin turbo legacy, but can't say the year / model.
and the WRX bolts seems to be 0.5cm too long.. hehe
After redooing the heads. i started reassemble the front.. still need some more gaskets and stuff.. but still going forward
i'm now entering the dark area of the hoses ... that scares me a little :\

Hey morgie
What kind of engine management are you going to run?
What kind of boost are you looking to push?
p.s.
that is going to be one hell of a sleeper
Well until you hit the throttle
Posted: Fri Jul 23, 2004 4:49 pm
by morgie
thanks, sleeper is my goal hehe
i'll start with the SDSEFI ems-3 for the engine management, but i'll surely switch for a more elaborated one soon (at least one with a laptop connectivity to easily swap maps)
My target is around 17-18psi, will depends on how the injectors will take it .. if i find bargain 550cc ones.. if the tranny supports it .. I will more likely start with 15psi and see how things goes. In fact, i want a fast but reliable daily driver

Welll. today i went into my first "major" problem...
i thought the left Legacy TT head was identital to a single-Turbo one.. but it wasn't ..
the return hose that taps into the head was pretty different, and interfered with the uppipe .. while being completely incompatible with the hose on the turbo.. as you can see here
it's a good change i have another set of heads so i could take out that hose and put it on my heads. Looking the pics of my Ej22T heads, i think i could have taken the hose from it too.
now it's all right
this was quite an easy problem to solve.. but i was affraid i got stuck there for a while :\

after some few problems.. i'm more close to completion..

Swap completely done by now. Pics can be found there :
http://public.fotki.com/morgie/morgie/o ... oteur/swap_!/
also.. some little videos
Engine wont start.. normal, i forgot to line-up the magnets on the damper with the SDS sensor.. :\
http://www.driftquebec.com/videos/morgi ... arting.wmv
After lining that up.. engine starts!
http://www.driftquebec.com/videos/morgi ... tartup.wmv
Can't beat the sound !!
http://www.driftquebec.com/videos/morgi ... /Run06.wmv
inside shoot... sounds even better in real
http://www.driftquebec.com/videos/morgi ... /Run05.wmv
and a mini drift on wet.. i'm the #3 car..
http://www.driftquebec.com/videos/morgi ... /Run04.wmv
Sds is now tuned, i can do the "rodage" peacefully.. i run it only at 6psi, and bellow 4500-5000rpm revs for at least the next 1500km.

That looks really great. Almost as great as that kid with the N/A STI motor a year ago (I know, I just can't let it go).
