Please explain this

Hi,
i've seen / heard the expression "Be there or be square(d)" .. ???
what does the "square" refers to ? .

"Square" is a mid 20th century American slang term for someone who is a conformist, a square peg who fits into a square hole. They are people who don't break the law, go to church and are generally a "good" person.

I dunno what kind of nerds you know, but the ones I know are pretty square.
I dont think it really has much to do with thinking out side of the box. Thats more of an, "you're not being original" saying

Square= won't take any chances in life, stay's with what's familiar. Won't do anything deemed "bad" by the powers that be.
