I know there is a sticky thread about the WRX shifter in our legacies. But I want to give some definitive answers on what I've found out from my swap process.

First of all, this info should hold true for both the sti short shifter and wrx stock shifter. I bought the sti short shifter, so that's what I'm referring to.

First thing you will need is this little joint piece.

Part # is 35047AC030

Now you may think, cool, that's all I need to do. Yes, but not really.

The stock bolt as you can see in the pics has a smaller diameter then the bushing in the joint. When you bolt this up to the short shifter or wrx linkage this will allow slop in the linkage, and not give as precise a feel.

On the sti short throw, the top hole in the linkage piece is smaller then the bottom one. I'm not sure why, probably due to the type of bolt they used. Sure I could have just ordered that bolt, but who knows what it would cost, and how long it would take to get here.

A bolt size of 3/8" is the closest (common) size bolt that will fit more snugly in the bushing. The bolt will go through the bottom hole of the shifter linkage. However you will need to drill out the hole to 3/8" for the top hole.

I bought a washer to stick on the bottom and a nylon lock nut for the top.

I tested it out, and there was no slop at all in the linkage.

i've got the sti short throw shifter in my car too. I like how solid it feels.

Whats total cost and install time on this mod???

Just the short shifter itself?

I paid about $236 for the short shifter. The adapter joint is about $40, and misc bolts is another buck or so.

Time wise, I don't see why you couldn't do this in an hour. I would think 2 hrs would be tops if you ran into issues.

I was doing some more thinking last night. It was about the bolt having threads on the one side and that they may prematurely wear the bushing.

I was thinking of getting a metal collar to go inside and then put a bolt through that. The main issue with this, I already drilled the smaller hole out to a bigger hole, plus the one side was already big. So if I put a smaller bolt through, I'd be introducing play in the linkage.

Assuming bolt hole size wasn't an issue, do you think the metal collar inside the bushing, and then a bolt through would add more play in the linkage because there's more componants.

Am I worrying too much about the threads wearing the rubber bushing? Probably.....I'm going to use the bolt I mentioned above. I took a few more pics of the bolt out of the bushing

I kinda think my shifter helped mess up my third and fourth gear by switching too fast. They dont grind when going in, they just dont engage i have to work at it for a while to get 3 or 4 to work by moving the shifter as far towards fifth as possible and then sliding it up along the shift guide? Need to get that fixed along with the front oil leak before the 16G goes in this friday
