Engine fan question... is one only for A/C use?

The smaller of my two fans has been inoperable for a while (the little one on the left), and I was going to get a replacement from the wreckers. I heard that this fan is only used when the A/C is being operated?? If this is true then i don't need the fan because my A/C is no longer on the car, and I'll just remove it. If anyone can straighten this out for me it would be greatly appreciated.

FWIW, I only have one engine fan in my factory non-a/c L. All the A/C cars ive seen have 2. Why not wire the second one in parallel for the fun of it?

Well, from what I've read, the smaller fan is only for the A/C, however when I have the A/C on, both my fans come on. When the fans kick on normally, both fans come on.
I'd just get a fan from the junkyard, stick it in and if it doesn't come on, wire it up in parallel for more cooling.

Normally both fans will run, though it seems they are controlled seperately because mine shut off at slightly different times.
