We could match up with the forward control Land Rover I'd like to have (though the Landie would likely break down on the way).

Gotta love the mogs. A few years back, I had a GTG with a group of Mercedes owners from the Mercedes Forum I frequent alot. To my surprise, 2 mogs showed up, and I could hear them about a mile before I could actually see them. One of them was an old 406 that had be converted into a crew cab, and the other was a 416 with that huge 5.7L diesel engine, and both were for sale, and I think they are still For Sale...

The 416 was somewhere around $16,000 and the 406 was around $11,000... There are lots of good sources to buy Mogs in the PNW, and actually a few firms that refurbish them to better than new condition...
