My wife's SS has stopped blowing heat or ac.

checked all fuses... the indicator lights for the vent/heat/defrost/etc. work fine, and they actually do still change where the air trickles in from.

Just no blower action.

SO... Sounds like she needs a new blower right?

Any advice or tips on removal / installation?

Any odd "known issues" with the blower that would possibly help out?

Does it work on the "4" setting?

There's a relay behind the glove box that usually goes out. I replaced a few of them in my 90 sedan. It is a sign that the blower is on its way out, so weigh that against the price of the relay i suppose.

So the blower does not work on 4? I thnk that means its not the resistor block thing.

First check to make sure the blower is not physically blocked with leaves, debris, etc...

Next you need to see if it is getting electricity, and always check to see if it works on the max blower setting. That's all I know.

There is also the Main fan relay which is located way up under the dash by the steering column. (It is snaped in a bracket like a Four Way Flasher.) Last year my fan didn't work on any speed, and that was the problem. It is a round silver relay with a white bottom and has a 4 prong connection. I hope this helps.

I am having the same problem also, my blower works fine, my contol unit has been replaced. Do you suspect it is the Main Fan Relay or the the one behind the glove box? Mine does not work on any setting.

I've got the same issue, I need the part number for htis silver relay as my fan works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't.

Usually after I mess around with the buttons or wait until the car warms up then it's good to go.

When it works it works 1 thru 4
When it doesn't it doesn't work on any of the 1 thru 4

I should probably get this switched out before the frost starts forming too much on me windows.

What about a similar problem:
The fan blows fine, but only occassionally out the dash vents. I can always feel it at my feet though. It's not intermittenly out the dash vents, but often it will just start at some point to work normally, and do so for awhile.

The number on the old relay that I removed is (056700-5260) 12 V 22A Now as I said before, my blower fan wouldn't work on any speed. So maybe some of you have a different type of heater related problem. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have an actual Subaru Part number for this relay?

Or if I give them(Subaru) the 056700-5260 number should they know what I'm talking about?

I'm glad I found this tread. I have the same problem. My heater works( I can feel a SMALL amount of heat) but the blower doesnt blow on any setting. I'm gona go look for that relay and see if thats it.

I replaced my blower relay about 2 weeks after I bought my car, and have been glad ever since. I just told the parts guy the part I needed, and he looked it all up for me. Another option is, if not located in Washington State, go to Subaruparts.com (washington state residents pay sales tax, I found it to be more expensive than my local dealer with shipping and sales tax ).

I have noticed a similar problem on mine yesterday on the way back from seven springs.
The blower does blow but it is weak on every setting and all speeds.
I had it on 4 on full defrost and it was barely blowing. Of course I was driving for quite a bit that day venturing all the way out to western PA, but I don't think that would have anything to do with it, would it?
But I turned it on today and it seems to be back to normal. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

anyone tell me what type of relay it is? SPDT? Cuz I dont want to pay friggin 35 dollars from subaru....I'll just wire up a bosch relay.

BTW...where is the blower located?

I paid $50 plus tax at my local dealer, so I wouldn't complain about $35...

ok I just took out the glovebox and was fumbling around....I checked and I had 12 volts (key in run) @ the connector to the blower....no matter what position the switch was in. wich is wierd....because it should only get power when the switch is on 1-4 correct?

could it still be the relay? how do I check to see which relay it is?

The relay (which is a SPST) provides the positive side.
vis-a-vis from what you say, it is not the problem.

The resistor block provides the negative.

You could try grounding the other connection at the blower.

IF the blower motor is okay and it's squirrel cage
is not clogged with debris.

It will spin at high speed.

If it does I would look to the switch's ground point.

I did not want to high jack your post - you may want to look at my switch
ground point problem - "blower on high speed question".

cool, verry helpfull skip. I found out my blower was dead. And then when I was ready to go and replace it.... my heater core decided to die on me too =\
