is the rotor supposed to slide off after the caliper braket is off?

Assuming you're talking about the fronts, yes. If you're talking about the rears, you need to make sure the parking brake is released -- then they should slide right off too.
If it needs a little... ahem... "encouragement," you can thread two M8 bolts into the holes provided on the rotor's hat. Thread them evenly and slowly and they should force the rotor free from the hub.

can I use a gear puller without causing damage to the hub?

yes you can use a puller. Just thread the bolts in, and press against the axle stub. That's what I do.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with questions that I had concerning my brake job. I completed the job last night and it was quite simple. The hard part was I had two rotors that didn't want to part with the car after 13 years so I had to force them off...one with a gear puller and the other with a hammer. I also did the bedding process (thanks BAC.5). The old pads didn't look too bad but they were glazed over. I'm happy with the fact that I truely learned something and I saved $200+ bucks. Thanks again.

Glad I could be of some help. I'm glad you saved $200 too! Not as intimidating as it may initially seem, huh?
