Ahh yes, living in this great salty wintered nation leads to a 13 year old car rusting itself into a slow grave...

As I bought the car used, and slowing showing some rust, the time has come to do some work and spend some money.

Pics are up at

The Roof is going to be remetaled, and a new windshield installed.
That I'm not doing myself.

The Rear Quarter on the fender behind the wheels was showing some destruction so until I learn how to weld and find a rustless parts car I'll be doing a restore every 2 years.

I'll be doing the bodywork there but having the same company paint my rear quarters at the same time...

(I hope my rear door paint is shiny enough that it doesn't look that different)

I removed the rear bumpers to find the inner support beams were rusted beyond belief, so I have those on order.... 53$ea.

Once again my welding situation... well, actually my own good workplace, then I would've fabbed those as well.

Anyway, Lets hear your body work experience stories.

I always start bodywork early in the season so I have plenty of time. September gets cold fast around here. I've had three cars die from cancer and I hate it. Burned through many wire wheels, primer, sealer, etc. over the years. The current car's money infusion has been well-noted and worth it. When it needs to be done again, I'm hoping I can do it myself and muscle out the fender flares just a little, like a 22B sort of, at the same time.

Wow thats alot of work. Very nice pics by the way.

How hard was it to remove the headliner?? How do you remove the bumpers..?

I'm fixing all the same rust spots on my car right now.. I would like to remove the bumpers but though it would be a pain in the ace.

I did remove the whole interior though with the carpet to fix some surface rust on the floors..

Do you have your headliner out to fix your leakey sunroof??

Repied in your other post.....

The bumper, pretty easy for me to take off.

the 4 main bolts came off with a prybar....they're under the carpet on either side of the trunk floor.

The 5 on each side broke. so that was easy enough..
3 inside, 2 outside. along the fender, easy stuff.

Maybe I'll to a write up on reinstallation

I think I am going to spend some money when I sell some stuff and get my rust fixed before the winter, and get my mirrors color matched and spoiler fixed.

Well an update, I dropped the car off Sunday night so they could start on it Monday.

I stopped by to see the car today and they've already finished the roof, and installed the new windshield.

It went in for paint this afternoon and will be ready tomorrow.

The roof looks amazing!!! I can't wait to see it with paint.

And omg it's gonna be wierd driving without a pockmarked pitted windshield. it's gonna feel like there's nothing there. lol.

I just hope that my bumper parts come in tomorrow at subaru as well.

Are you having them paint the whole car? Or just the work they did on the roof?

I'm thinking I should start looking into working on mine. :?

Money constraints didn't allow me to get the entire car painted this time around..

I'm just asking them to blend it as best they can.

My original paint is pretty shiny so new stuff shouldn't stick out too bad.

Looks good! So you just ground the rust away, and let the bodyshop take care of the priming and painting? I'm guessing they had to use some body filler as well?

I really need to buy a book or 2 on this stuff... I really want to derustify my car.

I did the grinding/sanding... bodyfilling, and sanding again.

They took care of fiberglassing the roof, and installing a new windshield.

They did a remarkable job at blending the paint in as well.

I've been doing body work for awhile now, and I"m nowhere near a pro, but it's not hard to get the hang of it.

From what I can see in the pictures, I agree with you on the paint job. Mind if I ask how much the painting cost?

Do you use the body filler to bring the surface level with that of the existing paint? And let the painters worry about keeping it level?

So many questions!!! Can anyone recommend a source for bodywork information (books, websites, etc)?

You'll never learn bodywork from a book... maybe amounts needed, and mixtures and such but other than that, try it on something... Like a piece of scrap metal or a JY fender... you'll get the idea.

I was going to get the painters to paint the entire rear quarter, but they said it just needed to be blended in, you can tell up close where the new meeets the old but it's not a show car so I don't car.

It cost 75$ from this guy to get the rear fenders done...

It was 700$ taxes in, including new windshield for the hold job.
