Are there really only 688 Legacy Turbos?

Post by snowboarded »

I was just doing a google search when I came across this information. Is this really true? I know turbo legacys are hard to find, but these numbers seem too low. Does anyone know whether or not this is an actual count?

1991 - 58 5-speeds were sold, and 149 automatics were sold.

1992 - 6 5-speeds were sold, and 5 automatics were sold.

1993 - 25 5-speeds were sold, and 45 automatics were sold.

1994 - 170 5-speeds were sold, and 230 automatics were sold.

Laruel did research on that when she got her 92 turbo wagon . . . which is an auto. She's still not sure if it's THAT rare.

We've hashed over this before. Those numbers have come up several times, but we really doubt they're accurate...

Yea, I think there are more than 5 92MT's on this board.

It doesn't make sense that they would have a huge opening, in 91, then drop production so drastically with 92, then ramp it so much in 93 and 94.

I DO know that Aegean Blue Metallic (which I understand, you and I both have) is supposedly the rarest color of all the Turbo Legacys, with White (I think) being the least rare. ABM was a pay-only option, only on Turbo's (I think, I've never seen an ABM N/A), only in 94. I've heard people seeing ABM wagons a few times, but very few Sedans.

Thats what I figured but was not sure. The numbers didn't sound right. I did wonder about the color which we both do have, never seen it before, but then again I didn't know about Turbo Legacy's untill a few months ago. The color, I think, is awesome tho.

If wagons made up about 20% of the turbos, and 11 turbos were produced in 1992, then it's safe to assume that a maximum of 3 92 turbo wagons were produced. Now, I own one, i've personally seen another le(limited edition, only in 1992) on the road, and there was one for sale in california when i was in the market for mine as well. I also believe that there's a member in portland with a 92.

Wouldn't be a problem if people searched. Does this really need to be a sticky?
and since the amount of people that actually search is well, very few the problem presists.

also laurel, there's no reason to make up a number, there are more than 11 92's as i showed you in your thread.

Only 15 (5-speeds) where ever prodeced (EXPERIMENTAL CAR)

Post by GT8 »

Here is the letter from FHI...................

Mr.Bailey,

Here is the information for you.

Your vehicle was produced only about 15 units.
It was kind of a test vehicle, just experiment purpose for Turbo in the U.S.
We couldn't find out how many blacks were produced...It was too old.
Such a interesting coincidence that Subaru has just introduced Turbo Legacy
in this summer!

Anyway, your vehicle is VERY rare one, it's true!

Did I answer to your question?

Best regards,

Yuzo Mori
FHI

You could of bought my car for $4000.00 those interested, now the price is $19000.00 or we can talk just a little!

Sorry................ the McLaren is not for sale!

Please don't post the same thing in two different threads!

As I said in the other thread....don't believe everything someone tells you.

There is A LOT of accumalated knowledge on this board. In almost all cases we know more about these cars then subaru because we've tweaked and played with them. We may not know the nitty gritty as to why a change was made, but we know a part has changed. The chances are, you'd never find that out, even from talking to subaru or fhi. One, they're not going to give you that info, and two, they probably don't know.

While looking at estimates today, none of the places could get information based on my VIN. They told me that it was because my car was assembled in Japan and shipped over here (J in my VIN number).

This is a far shot...but could it be that the 655 turbos that SOA has record of were actually assembled here in the states, were the rest were assembled in Japan. That would make sense why they don't have record of them, maybe. I don't really know how all this works with dealerships selling cars and keeping track of them, but I thought I'd offer the idea.

I thought that all the Turbos were assembled in Japan, but again, probally if they assemeled a few in the US each year, I am sure that could have saved the FHI some money...

From what I know of stocking in vehicles at the dealership(i'll see if i can find out anything about older cars on friday), at least now, all of the legacies(even the turbos) are Assembled in Indiana, with the engine and tranny built in Japan, the Forester is Made in Japan, and I can't remember where the impreza line is assembled, but I believe it's in Indiana as well.

Subaru has record of all of it's vehicles sold. I know for a fact that my 1992 Legacy Turbo Wagon was a dealer demo at Carter Subaru for 3.5 months in the 2nd half of 92(they're only allowed to put 5,000 miles on the odometer). I also know from working there now, that people who are entitled to the "Dealer Demo" (managers and finance guys) are not allowed to pick rare cars. We have about 5-7 STi's on the lot, and none of the managers can even take them. They are allowed to take LGT's, but once again, nothing in a rare color/interior finish combination. Do you honestly think that my car would be allowed as a dealer demo if it was THAT rare?

That's quite untrue. I've seen far too many JF legacys, and 4S foresters for it to be accurate.

the ones we get have stickers on the windows that say where they're assembled, all of the ones in indiana have stickers with sticky bits at the top and bottoms, and the japan ones are all the way sticky. I can take photos if you like

Supposedly, the entire Legacy line (Legacy, Outback, Baja) is made in Indiana, and the entire Impreza line (Impreza/WRX/STi, Outback Sport, and Forester) is made in Japan. But Hardy says otherwise...

Your donor car was just a whole bunch of oddities Josh :)

To add that to the list, it was an Indiana-made 90, it had ABS on an L and a 5spd (ABS should have only been available on LS AT's)...
