This past weekend a guy I know was following me in his WRX and we got on it a bit and he said that I was shooting 8"-10" flames out the tailpipe when I'd shift! Ever since I went catless I thought maybe I did sometimes but now I know for sure, hehehe. Maybe I'm a dork but I think it's pretty cool. :D

If you do, I probably do. I'm sure I've been shooting flames a bit too, I wanna know for sure.

Woah.

Where exactly do the flames come from? You're somehow running really rich during shifts and there's something hot in the exhaust igniting the excess fuel?

I used to have crazy backfiring going catless. Dunno about flames shooting out of the exhaust, tho.

I had it down to a science!

If I eased on the throttle (<10%) and then let off the gas and then quickly floor the pedal my car would make a loud "BANG" through the exhaust, like a gunshot.

It was funny doing that near a pedestrian on the side of the road  I gave quite a few people soiled undies with that technique! LOL!

If the WRX was running catless and had a aftermarket BOV venting atmospheric then flames will follow. The WRX run pig rich when you shift because the ECU is compensating for the rush of air when the stock BOV opens. When you vent it then it just runs rich on shifts.
