Computer help needed!

Ok, 2 things.
1) My FTP no longer works properly. Max upload for the past few days or so, has been 4kbps. It times out the server before things get uploaded. Really ticking me off.
2) P2P file sharing programs do not connect, and I don't know why. Neither does Tech Support at school.
The FTP USED to work at school, it just stopped working all of the sudden on Thursday night.
Same with AOL Instant Messanger, it just doesn't work here at school anymore. Not just for me, but for everyone on campus. No one is on AIM.
I want my FTP to work so I can post the videos that Corsair sent me, and so I can start getting the pictures he took up as well.

Do other people on campus have trouble with peer-to-peer and FTP?
What peer-to-peer applications?

I don't know about FTP, I don't know anyone else who uses it.
For P2P stuff, I use Limewire and Shareaza. Neither work. Apparently, other people are using these programs with success.

Well, you apparently have internet access, so getting out to the rest of the world isn't the problem.
Have you tried releasing and renewing your IP address to see if you're just stuck on a bad router through the ISP?

Hmm, I dunno. Some Windows thing? You've tried rebooting, right? Updating your antivirus software? Updating anti-spyware?

How do I do that Art?
Outlook express works (sending and receiving).
I really wanna get the video of Vikash's and my closest run online. He kicked my ASS in the R/T by like half a second! My time slip says I'm in the Top Fuel class.

Yes on all-counts Vikash.
Actually, I don't have any anti-spyware. I should probably get that. Any ones you prefer?

And my time slips say I'm in the Bike class.
What version of Windows are you using? If it's a recent one, you should be able to go to a command prompt and type something like "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew" to do what Art said.

Oh. I don't know much about anti-spyware, but I've heard good things about both Spybot Search-and-Destroy and Ad-Aware.

I'm running XP. I'm computer illiterate, so how do I get to a command prompt?
For some reason, on every other slip I have against you, it says your in the Bike class. Not this one though. It's the 12:28PM slip (if you kept all of yours). I also have the 12:08PM run where I red-lighted. I think the 12:08 run was your second fastest.

start menu->programs->Accessories->command prompt
type "ipconfig /release"
then type "ipconfig /renew"
I'd recomment Spy Sweeper if you can get a hold of it. I ran adaware and spybot and spy sweeper still cought a lot of stuff. If you have any traces of gator after running those, get rid of it.
That should get you started.

No dice. There was no option for "Command Prompt" under the accessories menu.

Just open up "Run" from the start menu, then type "cmd" and hit enter. The window will pop up.

OK, I searched, found it, and did it. Let's try it and see if it's any better...

Nope, no dice. Everything is just as slow.

Hmmmm. . . I'll keep thinking of things to try, Phil.

Well, the IM thing is schoolwide, so it's probably not your computer, unless it's some kind of worm. I don't know if the IM, FTP, and P2P problems are related or not.
It almost sounds like your school shut down filesharing paths or something... And hasn't told everyone yet. Or something.
Did you install the anti-spyware programs? It makes sense to install all three.

Maybe XP SP2's firewall?

It almost sounds like the dorm's router crapped out. Does it do this for all the dorm computers, as well as the computer labs?
I've done a traceroute back to your IP, and it keeps getting hung up at 129.71.127.101
I've looked up your IP from the board's admin stuff, but I'd like to see if it's matching, or if they have a firewall setup.
Try doing a traceroute to yahoo.com and see what shows up.
You can go to the command line again....start run, cmd, and then type: traceroute yahoo.com
It should look something like this, except have your own info.
1 0 0 0 66.98.244.1 gphou-66-98-244-1.ev1.net
2 0 0 0 66.98.241.4 gphou-66-98-241-4.ev1.net

I'm leaning towards a routing table being fubared or the university put up a NAT type firewall.
Having you verify your IP address will help eliminate or prove the firewall theory

When I type "traceroute" all I get is:
'traceroute' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
wtf?

The FTP works again. It was in "passive mode" but when I turned it off, everything was good. I was spiking at 75kbps upload speeds.

what's your ip address?
have you tried calling anyone at the help desk or network support to see if there is a problem or if they changed something?

Yea, I stopped by yesterday. He didn't know why P2P wouldn't work. He said AIM was down for the campus.
My IP is.... 10.1.4.99
