Wheel upgrade...

How do I find out what size wheels will fit my car if I upgrade to a bigger sizes? I know nothing about wheel sizes other then bigger typically looks better.
I have the opportunity to purchase some MY05 Legacy GT wheels. Not sure if they will fit on my MY99 Legacy SUS. Legacy SUS has P205/70 R15. That is right out of my owners manual. Tire rack says a 225/50-17 will fit my MY99 SUS. The MY05 GT ones are 215/45 ZR17. I know those are differant numbers for a 17" wheel. Does that mean I'm out of luck.
Not sure if that is even enough info for someone to be able to answer the question. Someone told me there might be wheel width issues also. If I left out some essential piece of info post here and I will get the info.
Thanks for your help.

They should fit, but the OEM 05 Legacy wheels are ugly.

No, I think the 05s use a different bolt pattern, same as the SVX.

No, that's just for the 05 STi. The 05 L-GT has the same 5x100 pattern as us. I am 110% positive on this.

I stand corrected....I thought subaru change across all models to piss wheels makers off.

Hehe, nope! I've swapped wheels with my buddy Keefe to test fit a good bit. Tried to find the limits of the BC. Apparently, an 18x8 with a 245 won't quite fit under a BC without some work.

So the 05 GT wheels should fit? They shouldn't look bad on my SUS though. I am not doign any major exterior mods. I just hope to add GT bumpers.

I think they'd look great on a BC/BF. I've been considering it too.

Can you actually explain the system for body style lettering? If there a chart out there that tells which years had which body style? i.e. BC = Legacy GT 97-99 or whatever? Hopefully someone with more knowledge in that area then me will post here.

BC is 1st gen Sedan (89 to 94)
BD is 2nd gen Sedan (95 to 99?)
BE is 3rd gen Sedan (00? to 04)
I don't remember the chassis designation for the 4th gen. I think it's an S code though...
BF is 1st gen Wagon
BG is 2nd gen Wagon
BH is 3rd gen Wagon

So my 99 SUS should be a BD body style. Does that mena all BD parts will fit on my car? OR within each body style are there differances also?

Pretty much all BD parts will fit. It does depend, as there were different trims and such (GT, L, LS, LSi, SUS, etc).
For the most part, you can make just about any Subaru part bolt onto any Subaru car. Things are so interchangeable, they should sell the cars at IKEA.

The 2005 Legacy GT wheels are 17x7" so you should be able to run them with 215 or 225 tires and have absolutely no rubbing problems.

D'oh! Forgot to mention one unique thing about the GT wheels . . . the offset is a bit more to allow for larger brakes.
I'm not certain, but the Legay 4-pots should fit within them if anyone ever decides to make the upgrade.
