Engine mounts? They are huge!!!

Mine seem to be getting a little weak... time to replace!

I have a set just wasting space here that I took off a 1990 EJ22 (also wasting space).

One difference when you compare them to mine though...

THEY ARE F#*KING HUGE!

Honestly, they seem to have twice the rubber of my stock, and are larger than the WRX ones I have seen. They were replace on the engine, I can tell, they are in GREAT shape.

What are these things, why are they so huge? The rubber is round, BTW. I would imagine they could do a great deal to stiffen my engine....

But, what are they!?! Were these huge things stock in '90??

Sounds like you've got some of the liquid filled ones there.

Is that good or bad???

Odd. My EJ22 had square rubber mounts, but the turbo came with cylindrical ones. The cylinder-type seems stiffer, but that's just a 'squeeze-the-Charmin' observation as I didn't mount the cylinder-type (rusty) and reused my old ones when I swapped as they seemed fine.

the round "gel filled" ones are softer than the full-rubber square ones :/

They're also a LOT more expensive, as I can personally attest to :(

Softer? Hmm... even then they are still better than the crappy ones in there now :).

Would you recommend those over the square ones?

I've put grN mount on my engine, there is A LOT less engine twist under hard driving, and also A WHOLE LOT more noise, vibration and such when driving normally.

But for car nut like me the trade is really worth it, O.E. mount are way too soft

I've got the sti mounts in mine, paid around 100 bucks for them. I dont know how it was before because I never drove the car with the old mounts in but I can tell you now that it seems fine. Oh, the sti ones are square and hard.

Those STI mounts look like the regular mounts I have. The gel-filled are expensive, huh? Maybe I should sell them.

If I'm not mistaken I think I priced out the round ones at $130 a piece..... from the dealer

the GN mounts are much harder. you an barely push your fingernail into the rubber while the oem ones are almost jello like in comparison.

unfortunately you probably wont have much luck selling the hydro mounts.

The funny thing.....the gel mounts are supposed to be softer, however I have held the square ones and moved them, and they do indeed feel softer then the round "gel" filled ones.

The sti ones actually have the same part # stamped in the rubber as the stock square ones, but the rubber compound is MUCH more stiff.

I think the gel-filled ones are supposed to be able to absorb vibration more than the rubber ones, which is slightly different from just being flexible.

yep the gel filed ones make your car seem like it has a smoother idle than it really does.

thats good to remember about the GN mounts having the same PN on them. they use the same mold for all the mounts just change up the rubber compounds. so if you get the GN mounts dont panic the PN are supposed to be that way.

OK, i just asked Myles at RCE if the STi hardened mounts would fit a 92, as his site only says they fit MY93-04. Has anyone made the GroupN Engine Mounts fit a 92 or prior? I just talked with him via IM, and he said the only reason he made that revision was because he kept getting returns...
anyone here know if there is some kind of engine mount difference pre-93?
I really want GN mounts!

I know the pic sucks, but here's the sti mounts sitting bolted to my car

I don't know why he would have people returning them unless they look at the mounts and see they're different.....and think they don't work. The mounts will work on any EJ series motor.

the only reason i can think of for returning would be NVH or they decided it was too hard to put them in. i mean you have to do sooo much work. im kidding of course. about the work part but im sue some feel that way.

The Group N mounts work on ALL EJ engines. They are all the same.

Myles has the 93-04 Impreza listed. That's why. I'm sure people returned them because they had hydro mounts and the PN's were different and/or they looked different.

Definately go for Group N mounts. They are a great upgrade. But they increase NVH by a sizeable margin.

The GrN, which are STI too, fit perfectly on a 92 legacy.

yes the GN mounts are by STi, however the problem arises if you just order STi mounts you wilol get the mounts for the STi which are not the same as the GN mounts. i think they are stiffer than the other mounts but not as stiff as the GN ones.

I just scored a set of STI mounts for me car for free. Is it really worth the time to put them in?
