EJ22T in an old Beetle?

Post by Blackbart »

I have a 1975 VW Beetle with no motor, I also have a 92SS that I may take apart because I need the tranny, has anyone here tried to stick an EJ22T in one of these cars?

I'm not wondering why you would want to put an ej22t in a 1975 beetle, I'm wondering why you own a 1975 beetle.....oh yeah :(*3

His username was like "skullboy" or something like that, he had the unusual ability to post on this board as a Guest too, but yeah he managed to shoehorn an EJ22 in a dunebuggy... That's all I remember...

Ethyl was homemade by someone in the mid 60's, don't know what the frame is. The tub is galvanized steel, the engine cover is aluminum and the back end is fiberglass that was formed right onto the frame. I bought it with no motor and put in a Ford 302. I am gonna keep it ugly, kind of a fun car that we can clime on when we go to the ice cream stand. I am going to lower the fenders and put on spoke wheels from a model T.
Did you ever see any of those movies from the 50's when a bunch of hoodlums steal candy from the corner store, jump into a jalopy and speed away with the town cop yelling at them? Well that's the kind of car I wanted. Just fun, nothing else.
I have too many other vehicles that "own me", don't want to get them dirty, etc., not this one, this is something else.

No it isn't my bug. I saw it posted somewere when I was looking for AWIC install information. I bookmarked it for future reference and forgot about it until this thread came up. Wish I could tell ya more, but I really don't know anything else about it.

It is very, very interesting that you should mention an EJ22 to VW conversion. My friend had an 83 VW vanogan with the stock VW motor in it. He pulled it out, and stuffed in an EJ22. I have all the plans he drew up and TONS of details on it. The design was originally to go in a VW “thing” (nifty little cars, 4WD, etc). To do the conversion, there are only a few simple things you need. The first is an aluminum adapter to make the EJ22 line up to the bellhousing on the VW, and the second is set of modified headers (they need to face the opposite direction, haha). The rest is simple; I have all the wiring diagrams etc. if people are interested… you can hook up the sube computer to the vans system and use every engine diagnostic you would on a normal legacy. Oh yeah, I think there is a cooling issue, you need to put a radiator into the VW if its air cooled. Sorry, all, I realize this post is a little stale, but I never bothered to read it until now.
Cheers!

He's thinking of moving the disks in further down the axle. He also is thinking of something for the tranny, but isn't sure how to get it all to work yet.
