Help me choose a clutch and motor mounts.

I need a new clutch and since I'm soon to be replacing my motor (hopefully) that would be an excellent time to do it. I don't have a lot of money so price is a concern but I want a clutch that can handle my high HP application. I look to be putting around 300 hp to the flywheel. I really want to get a lightweight flywheel too but I don't think I can afford it this time. So that being said it'd be nice to have get a performance clutch that'll work with the stock flywheel.
I'll need new motor mounts at the same time, again price is a concern but I want quality mounts. I should probably do the tranny mounts too but it depends on cost as to wheather or not I'll be able to.
So any of you guys have any suggestions, prices and/or links?

I have heard of people having their stock EJ flywheels machined to remove considerable weight (I know the stock EJ22 is a monster). From what I understand, it is a decent and inexpensive alternative to buying a lightweight model. I have mine resurfaced every time I have it off, which only costs 13 bucks (and takes a remarkable 15 minutes), and its got plenty of beef left. The guy who had his machined down and resurfaced paid $75 total, I believe. Apparently it’s not uncommon in the muscle car/meathead realm, but I haven’t heard much about it on this forum… take this for what you will. At least this way you would have more clutch options.
Cheers!

I thought WRX clutches and flywheels were slightly larger in diameter than Legacy Turbo clutches and flywheels... that might mean you can't use a WRX clutch without also getting a WRX flywheel. You could get a stock WRX flywheel cheap on NASIOC though.

Ya, they're different. I'm asking if anyone knows of a performance clutch that'll match our stock flywheel so that I don't
have to get a wrx flywheel.
If not then ya, I'll have to pick one up on nabisco.
Thanks for the suggestion Fishbone. If I can get a clutch that works with my stock flywheel then I will probably just have it resurfaced.

The clutch specific to the Sport Sedan is more than the WRX one. I would strongly recommend picking up a wrx flywheel if at all possible... for future modibility.
Stage 2 is wonderful when you break it in correctly (I had the chance to do this twice

). The kevlar lets you slip it a LOT more and less worry about burning the organics. The kevlar gets stickier the hotter it gets. This is what let me pull consistent 2.1 second 60' times when I still had my super old exhaust on.
Lots of people get their flywheel lightened... but it does post a risk on higher revving cars. If that breaks, it will penetrate the cabin. People have lost BOTH of their legs due to this. I would just save up for the exedy solid steel piece.
And I would consider the tranny mount more important than the engine mounts. Just because it saves your gearbox and would help out your synchros. But if your motor mounts are bad, all the STi mounts would be pretty important.

yeah for lightening a flywheel...
it MUST be machined and then balanced, and by this I mean dynamically balanced. I would only trust a shop experienced in doing this. There are many, however, as this is a common muscle-car mod. You can't just machine it and let it spin 8000 rpm, a lack of balance could be a very bad thing.
Easier to fit a ready-to-go flywheel, and no delays that way.

Matt - Exedy Stage 1 and the Exedy Flywheel worked for me, and haven't let go in the 10k they have been on the car.
Group N mounts too.
My clutch, flywheel, and all mounts ran me just under 1000, but it's been worth it.
clutch from
www.ninosautoaccessories.com and mounts from
www.racecompengineering.com (actually I got them from
www.mauromotorsports.com because Myles was out of them).

Thanks Phil but $1k is waaaaay out of budget for me. I'm buying a new motor and the clutch is really an after thought just because I need one. I know your setup is sick and if I could, I would but I can't.
I was hoping to avoid getting a wrx or lightweight flywheel for now because of money but I will probably have to get at least an OEM WRX FW so that I can get a reasonable clutch. So ok, if I get a wrx FW what would be some good options for clutches for my power output? Something good but no 6-puck, $600 dollar racing clutch...

I've got a generic (i could find the name if need be) "heavy duty" clutch. my ripsnortin 130 hp can't make it slip, despite my best efforts, but its hard to drive smoothly.

Did you miss this post?
If you break this in like a good boy (nothing over 4000 rpm for 400-600 miles) it is absolutely amazing. Completely normal daily driveable. But if you need to slip the snot out of it to get a good rain launch without spinning all 4 like a mad man, it will do it.

Thanks, ya I missed the link. I didn't see the Legacy Turbo clutch on there, only the N/A's and WRX. The prices seem pretty good for the torque numbers they're saying they support.

Choose Subaru Legacy 1992 and then scroll down. Below the non-turbo application is the turbo one. They don't have torque capacity numbers though.
Woah, they have an aluminum flywheel!

Hahaha, ok thanks I see them now.
The prices for the Legacy turbo clutches are exactly the same as the wrx ones though. Hmmm....

Hey, yeah, you're right... in fact, the part numbers are the same too.
I wonder what the deal is. Maybe they quit making the WRX-specific clutch, and now the clutches are made to the smaller diameter of the Legacy Turbo's, so they'll fit both?

Ya, I noticed that too. I don't know what's up with that. It doesn't seem right does it?
Are you sure that the WRX's are bigger? I was thinking it was the other way around for some reason but am probably wrong. I think I remember reading that somewhere though because I always thought the WRX clutch and flywheel was smaller.

Maybe I have it backwards. There are certainly people here who can tell us for sure.

Yes, the WRX clucth is 3mm larger in diameter than the stock unit.
I'd offer you my stock clutch, but it's probably in worse shape than yours.
My stock flywheel probably has more life on it than yours, if you want that for free. It's only been on the car for less than 100k.
I'd say at least try to pick up the Exedy clutch, it's good. I'm making the same, or more, power than you, and it's held up just fine. It's grabby, but not TO bad to drive. I've gotten used to it, and if I can drive it daily with relative smoothness, so can you.

Smack! There it is. You were right V.

Is that the same clutch that's just a metal disk on one side?

Thanks. I'm unsure the route I'm taking. I can probably get an OEM WRX one dirt cheap and then get a rex aftermarket.

I definitely want a clutch. We'll see how the budget goes.
Does the EJ20G have our sized flywheel?

In all fairness, my stock clutch just has no ridges left on either side, and the engine side is about .25mm away from the studs.
The EJ20G has the larger flywheel. Brent's 98 with the EJ20G had an ACT 3-puck in WRX size.

Well it looks like I'm going to get the STI group N motor mounts, tranny mount and pitch stop mount from Myles. He has the best prices I've seen.
I'm still undecided on the clutch and flywheel. I really don't want to pay retail for 'em. I wish I could get a lightly used L.W.F.W. and good clutch...

Don't worry about the pitch stop mount, it is unnecessary at best. And it is the same one that came on a '96 Legacy L or something like that.

I think all of the Impreza's had the Grp N pitch stop mount. I know Brent's 93 Impreza L had one.
Matt - Did you tell Myles that Dr. Phil sent you?

Really? Hmm, I guess if I had an Impreza I'd be set.
No really, you guys don't think it's worth replacing the 12 year old OEM pitch stop?
Phil- No, but I haven't ordered them yet. Is Myles the friend of yours that I met at the Rockville meet? Maybe you could mention that I'm going to be ordering some stuff from him?

Nope. Money better spent elsewhere. If you are loaded, then why the heck not... but otherwise...

I drove for a good 1000 miles with mine loose and it really didn't make any difference in how the car felt/drive other then the damn thing rattled.
I wouldn't bother replacing.
