THE HORROR!!!

I heard the NASTIEST thing tonight :(

I was riding in my good friends 02 WRX. Pretty modded. Low 13's all day long on the stock turbo.

He was taking me for a ride so I could see how I liked the springs he installed.

He went for 2nd gear, and it wouldn't go in. I'm sure you all know where this is going.

No big deal, we thought. Just missed the gate.

Rounded the bend in 1st, kinda got on it (not on boost). Went for second, and BANG!

It was the loudest, gnarliest sound I've ever heard come from a car. It sounded like he blew a con-rod. It also sounded like he snapped the shift linkage and was dragging it on the ground.

Kiss 2nd gear goodbye.

We limped the car around in 1st and back to the parking lot.

I called a tow truck buddy of mine who sent his friend to get the car. Flat bed towed it to his house like 20 minutes away. Total cost of tow: 50 bucks. Glad I met THAT guy!

So now sits his car, broken and hurt. With a VF22, 840cc injectors, and some other goodies sitting in the garage, waiting for a dogbox to replace the 40k old stock tranny.

Good thing he JUST picked up a sponsor, and has a super cool tech that wrenches on the major stuff for the car (not me, unfortunately. I would LOVE to have my name on this car, it's super hot!)

Note to kids: Don't blow your tranny. It's an ear splitting and heart shattering sound.

Yes. Espically when you are running STi times all day long. It sure as hell wasn't the driving, it was the power.

Yeah.. Its good to either know people, or have parents with AAA memberships. My tow cost was about ~$15. Serious.

Was he like me, did he cry a little as they loaded the car up on the tow truck?

I have to second Hardy's sentiment. There's no need to slam gears around...

everyone says they're weak, wrx trannys are stronger than our own. yet you dont hear hundreds of horror stories about them do you? What about all the other wrx's around the globe. Do you hear hundreds of horror stories about those trannys?

second gear is weak in the wrxs. just like the thirdd in skylines. i know a kid that blew his twice in two months. he has ra gears now.

oh and are his 850's from pe or are they modded blues? and is that much fuel really nessary for a 22. maybe a 20g with a 7^2 greddy housing or a zilla but a 22???

Second gear is not weak. People slam into 2nd. Your friend slams his gears around.

If anyone wants to give me a brand-new WRX , I'll bet I could drive it 200k miles, and drive it fast too, without doing any damage to the transmission.

45,000 miles making almost 300bhp on a factory 5-speed is a pretty good life. When you are running 13.1's all day, it doesn't become a matter of "if" but "when". Straight cuts will go in soon enough.

Subyluvr - More often that I've seen is that people slam into 3rd, but 2nd is what always breaks, and rightfully so. 2nd gear isn't weak, in fact, their gears are probably stronger than ours.

But the fact that through 1st, on a hard launch, the transmission case flexes. When going for a hard shift to second (well within the realm of synchro control), crunch. I'm sure you could get a stock WRX to go for 200k. I doubt highly that you could get a near 12 second WRX to go 200k on the original transmission, with any use trying to prove that 12 second slip.

Jason - For everything that car will have soon, 840cc should be just enough flow to keep the injectors, the engine, and the driver happy.

Anyone know anything about the new GT 5MT? It's supposed to be much stronger, but haven't seen anything concrete. Still flushing out my transmission options.

In buyers' guides I've read on the Impreza turbo/WRX the transmission is always mentioned as a strong point, but to watch for the usual sounds.

I learned something about the new Leg GT transmission yesterday at the Mastro Subaru meet (Opie knows his shit! :P)

I don't know if you can bypass this or not, but he says that the Leg GT transmission cannot be swapped into any other car, because it's the only Subaru that has the ABS sensor in the output shaft on the tranny, instead of individual sensors at each wheel.

What if you don't have ABS?

That's what I dunno. One could theorize that if you don't have it, that sensor would just be sitting there doing nothing, but I'm not sure...

Is he putting in a dog box or square cut gears?
