Deleting trouble codes?

I am trying to erase the trouble codes on my 94 SS. I left the battery disconnected overnight and did not even start the car this morning, the codes were still there. Can the car read the codes without it even being started? They are the knock sensor and the purge valve codes ( 35 and 22 ) Does this mean the problem still exists?
