Looking for 10-20 or so hp to give it some squirt.
Just stock everything right now.
Is it hopeless?
How about - K&N filter? performance exhuast? (where to find one?) Are there turbo kits available? yea or nea on the Venom 400 ecu upgrade? All feedback and ideas welcome.

thanks for your time,

Nah, nos presents danger to manifold.

10-20 hp is hardly anything. Intake mods are all stupid, exhaust mods might give you some power and make you go slower. Leave the car alone. If you're really determined, you can scavenge a turbo setup off a turbo legacy and run 5-6 psi. But nobody on here has done that, and theres a good reason.

Get a stand alone fuel management system... not a bad way to spent 10,000 dollars.... just kidding. You could do intake/exhaust/pulleys and whatnot but you won't get much out of it. Forced induction is basically the only way to go but $$$. I'd say either save for a turbo car, or do suspension stuff, that could be a lot of fun too, and these cars handle pretty good.

JY frankenstein an N/A motor with freer-flowing heads and high compression pistons.

How much do you want to spend?

Hey you, guys a little less negativity now!! :D

First: Make sure your car is running in tip-top shape.

This includes changing the plugs, wires, pcv valve, o2 sensor, air filter (k&n), updated knock sensor, and anything mechanical that needs replaced: half-shafts, wheel bearings, hood latch...

Second: Actually still part of the first, but get the inside of the engine cleaned up. How you say? Search for "Sea Foam" and "Water ingestion". And part of this includes an Italian tune-up. Get on the highway and beat the wizz out of the motor to get everything nice and hot to break up that nasty carbon.

Third: Free up some back pressure. Since it is N/A, merely replace your muffler with a free flowing unit. Your choice of muffler. I like glasspacks for a cheap zero backpressure muffler. Should be quiet until you get on it. The stock piping will provide enough velocity for the exhaust gasses, the muffler only restricts the flow for the sake of super low noise.

Fourth: Get weight out of your car. The horsepower to weight ratio is what determines how fast a car can be. That's why a Lotus can kick butt with a mere 197 hp and run like a V8. Weight reduction will make the biggest difference.

And get skinny tires pumped up with a lot of air, less rolling resistance for straightline speed - but that's optional.

Your lucky you didn't blow the welds off the intake manifold :P

please excuse my ignorance

What the hell is NOS!
What is JY frankenstein?
What is an N/A motor?
and where would I find a free-flowing muffler (i.e. glasspack)?

cheers,

NOS - Nitrous oxide
JY Frankenstien - well as the name frankenstien implyies, lots of different parts put together to make a beast
NA - naturally aspirated
Muffle - don't know

I have a 93' NA FWD and one thing nobody has mentioned yet is the grounding mod. This is basically redoing some electrical ground connections to get better signals to the ECU. It helps some, some it doesn't seem to. For me though it made a noticable difference in that I have a smoother throttle response and no hesitations and my idle is lower by a couple hundred RPM. But definately check your plugs, wires, filters, etc. Make sure it's in good shape and then definately get some sea foam. I would also recommend vrg3 scan tool (see the electronics forum) to make sure all your sensors are working properly. A properly running NA while not fast exactly is certainly spirited and a lot of fun.

Any kind you want; hit up ebay, (there's PLENTY of ebay auto parts warehouses in Vegas) and find any aftermarket muffler made for loserboy ricecars. They free up enough, and your ride's gonna sound sweet. I had a DTM from V-Power (http://www.vibrantperformance.com/) and it sounded AMAZING. Your stock exhaust is fine, provided there's no leaks, and it all flows the way it should. Stock size is.. 2.25"? I'm not sure.. but my muffler inlet was 2.5", so you'll need to have your shop weld some kind of mating piece to fit certain mufflers.
A muffler shop would also have Glasspacks, too. (Cherry Bombs, etc?)
Try to find a shop that's never done a Subaru before --the look on their faces later will be priceless once they hear the sound.

JY = Junkyard

Natural Aspiration as in not Forced Aspiration (turbo, supercharger, etc...). Aspiration is breathing, i think. So how the engine breathes.

Any Pepboys, Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc... would have a free flowing muffler for less than $20 or so. They are called turbo mufflers, sometimes glasspacks or something along that line. Buy the one with the correct inlet diameter and it shouldn't be more than $60 or so to have it installed.

Oh, and search for how to remove the snorkus and the coffee mug modification.

Aspiration is wanting to be more than you are.

haha.. I had to think about that one for a sec. Aspiration has become associated with the way in which an engine gets its air supply and nothing else...lol

It's also the act of breathing in.
