Howdy all,

I'm trying to find some info on an electric steering pump. What vehicles did they come in? How well do they hold up? Cost?

TIA!

Electric? As opposed to what?
What are you looking for in your current steering setup? I don't think you can elminate the use of fluid, or the pump, per se. But if you're looking for a more sporty steering feel, or less assist, there are ways to increase the line pressure in your PS system to give it a harder feel, hence, less squishy-ness..
It has something to do with wrapping the lines around the steering rack so that the pressure is greater, and your wheel will feel like more like you're driving something without PowerSteering.

The xt6 and the fc rx7 are the only two vehicles im certain came with an electric ps pump. The xt fluid is no longer made, so its more or less not an option. I'm sure you already know the advantages of an electric pump. Have you considered the electronics involved in powering an electric pump? I wouldnt be surprised if it was ecu controlled, making it rather hard to adapt. I'm sure you could feed it a constant voltage, or have it on a dimmer, but then you lose the variable assist. In short, i think there are ways of adapting the current rack to provide for your needs that would be less of a headache.

Of course im interested... want to provide a little background on your motivation and whatnot?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not familiar with electrical steering pumps and wanted to find out more info. This isn't for a Suby application. The mechanical power steering on the Legacy is more than adequate. I'm in the process of building an off-road vehicle and thought the use of an electric power steering pump would be an interesting addition.

Thanks.

I've had no problem getting cybrid PS fluid for my xt6 at my local dealer (they had to order a case and made me buy 4liters at $15 a bottle, though  )

fat chance of getting it anywhere other than a dealer or some guy that's got some sitting around in his closet, though
