"I can't help but tinker"
I have absolutely no desire to become the fastest/best handling/best looking car on the street. I just want to have the car be enjoyable and reliable.
I also like it when people give props for what I've got. It's pretty neat to hear people talk about it.
I set up a small local meet at a wing place. There was an 05 STi, a relatively stock WRX, and a Stage5 WRX. He posted the pictures, and captioned: "Phil's legacy is hot. I wouldn't fuck with that thing."
Plus, I love to tinker. Swapped my uppipe today, and set up ready for winter mode

No matter what it was I'd be messing with it. I can't stop working on things, writing, or fixing stuff. Today I was checking out an old Sea Ray we may end up owning (the marina, that is) due to outstanding bills and the owner's lack of money. Everyone else saw a toilet of a boat, but I was seeing what I could do to it to make it sweet. Ah, yes ... ever the optimist.

All I want is for my car to be a pretty, comfortable, reliable daily driver until it just can't do it anymore. Is that so wrong??
Well, I only have to take the timing belt back off and replace the cam seals I didn't replace the first time

and reseal/rebuild the oil pump while I'm at it as I believe it's the cause of my very minor and quiet valve tapping. Then I have to take the a/c system back apart and put new O-rings in it since the old ones are literally in pieces, then put it all back together and find someone reputable to pull a vacuum and charge it. Then I have to find out why this damned thing likes to stall unpredictably when declutching as I approach a stop sign/light, which could be a number of things, I'm guessing anything from a bad water temp sensor to a bad ground. Then I need to pull all 4 hubs and replace these stupid-ass wheel bearings (Subaru, when are you gonna get this right???) and while I'm at it, I'm gonna pull the rear diff and pull the pumpkin cover which I see is leaking, then I'm gonna pull the rear subframe and replace all the mounts (I've already got new motor mounts and a new tranny mount, why not?), and I'll have cvaxles.com rebuild my rear axles for shits and giggles. Oh and that clunk I'm having I think is coming from the front, I think it's front-swaybar related, so while I have the hubs off, I'll play with that. That should pretty much do the mechanical stuff. But I still need a paint job as mine is fading fast and I still have that ugly disgusting black bumper, I'm eventually gonna give a body shop $2000 cash and say fix everything you can, from the dents in the doors to the horrible misalignment of my driver's door. Plus they're gonna black out all the chrome and paint my door handles. Then after I get some new tires and put them on my XT6 wheels which won't sell

Then I just need to get some new speakers and a new head unit, do some more stupid things I can't think of right now, and I'll be set!!!
Phew, I feel better now...

I will personally NEVER be happy with the performance of any car I own no matter how good it is. I'm sure I'm not the only one...

At some point I'll be satisfied (always happy with it) but I don't know if I'll ever get there. With more money maybe, but then I'd divide myself among more cars and projects ... Man, I hate rich people who do nothing! What a waste. If I had money I'd barely have time to sit down for all the shit I'd do.

I have been diagnosed with "tinker-itis.” It is a terminal disease and is contagious, bored roommates/friends are the most at risk of contracting the disease. No inanimate object is safe from the side effects.

Yeah... I suffer from that, too, and part of it is curiousity. Damn Learning. I always have to learn, especially if it's something useless to everyone else, even myself. I'll take my ENTIRE intake apart, just to see if I'll get some ideas rolling for a better way to get air. Nope. Never do, but I always end up losing time and screws. So.. shit breaks.
Yeah, I'd love to have a car that was reliable, fun, and most importantly, RELIABLE. I'm not really down with gobs of mods, I just want it to perform well, and efficiently. Unfortunately, I don't usually know what I'm doing, other than a 'good guesstimate'..
oi vey..
Good Poll, scott!

My vote:
Well, i just wish my engine was running just a bit better....because it's blown da fuck up!
Nomally though I'd have voted "I can't help but tinker" because I can't. I'm always giving the old girl some love. If she starts running too good I have to take her out for a good flogging and try to break something. Hehe. I mean the last time she was running like a banshee, so I leaned her waaaaay out and POW! Now I gets ta tinker. Yeeeaa.

I used to tinker, but I'm done.
Other vehicles have skewed my persective on speed.
