1991 Legacy Turbo

I'm looking at getting a legacy turbo for rally, and I was just wondering since you guys are the experts how good of an ametur rally car a hardly modified legacy will make.

These cars are great for rally, a real easy car to learn on seeing as it has got a bit of power to throttle the car through corners but not scary enough that the learning curve is to high.
They are competative with subaru 2.5 rs, and eagle talons, they are not the lightest but they have the turbo which takes up some of its short comings.

So if I thow on an intercooler the cars can handle a good amount of power right? I would want to put down at least 200 to 250 whp. I know the legacy is heavy stock, but how much weight can be removed from these cars?

Not much weight can be removed. And you have to add the roll cage.
I gutted my wagon, and they weigh about the same as the sedan (probably 50-100 lbs more), and I was able to get it to 2800 lbs. This was with no interior or seats, no AC, no anything that could be removed. The only way to get it lighter is to remove glass and door interiors. And maybe the dash.

i would reccomend a nonturbo first for rally. the 2.2 has good usable power, and is a very sturdy motor. this reccomendation will become more clear later in this post.

as to why i reccomended the n/a motor, here is why. Rally America (the sanctioning body that took over for the SCCA) will not allow rookies into a AWD turbo rally car unles they have previous motorsports experience.that being said you can get you turbo car and drop a ej22 in it untill you complete enough coefficients to pass the roookie restrictions. i know hearing about restrictions on what car you can use is frustrating but it had to be done by the sanctioning body to keep event insurance low and therefore entry fees from rising more.

if i can have fun in a 4000 pound S-10 rallytruck you can have fun in a 2700 pound awd legacy w/130 hp. i was the codriver in it for one event.

rally370 is a member here who rallies a n/a legacy l in CA. he loves it. and has a blast. almost all of the wrx rally bits will work on these cars so you dont have to reinvent the wheel.

So in conclusion:
get the SS. have some fun and rallycross it and slowly build it into a stage rally car. then drop a n\a ej22 into it go rallying. meanwhile rebuild the ej22T into a rally motor that wont let you down. then once you are no longer a restricted rookie put the hot turbo motor in and go win some reagional rallies.

oh by the way on my 90 we dropped 130 pounds out and left the complete dash front seats headliner and most of the trim in.
you should be able to drop 250 pounds out of a sedan easily. if you are really weight concious you could replace the rear window and two triangle windows w/lexan. also gut the bracing out of the rear decklid and the hood and rear doorshells. i would leave the front ones intact though for safety.
iwould leave the bumper beams too. they could save your but if you hit a tree head on.
oh and if you get a SS you will have to find a way to fill in the sunroof hole as glass roofs are not allowed.

Well if you are just starting out in the "Rally" thing, you shouldn't put an intercooler, or any mods for that measure, onto your because it will change the class you run in to "Open" class. I believe the only mods allowed in the stock classes are, suspension, ulimited exhaust, and free turbo boost, aswell as safety features are manditory. That being said with an intercooler, more boost, FCD, diamond coilpack, for improved spark, yes you could run that kind of horsepower easily with this motor. One of, if not, the strongest block Subaru has delivered.
