what did you all use for simple tuning. By that I mean something to read and modify your air/fuel ratio. I heard that a apexi turbo timer can be made to read the oxygen sensor voltage, and by that you can tune off of that.
What else have you all used?

Tune by wideband O2 and EGT.

Ideally, if you don't know what your doing, you might want to let a pro help you.

There's probably a TON of books on the topic of tuning.

i have egt, it wors okay, but I have heard it is not accurate enough.
I read can read the o2 sensor and use that to make adjustments. I dont have to make a hole for the new o2 sensor, I can just read off the one I have now.

The one you have now is probably a narrow band O2 sensor. Not very useful for tuning. Low resoloution. EGT and Wideband with a wideband tuner is how people road-tune SAFC setups.

What exactly are you tuning though? I assume an SAFC or the like.

If you have a standalone ECU, you should just tune with the software given. I'm unfamiliar with tuning a standalone ECU, as every one is different. I will hopefully have a better grasp of tuning EMS in the near future though.

AEM makes a A/F gauge that reads off a wideband, and shows the ratio as well as the color. EGT is good, you should be able to do pretty well with that, but a wideband O2 is definitely what you want also.

You can mod Autometer A/F gauges to read wideband.

Wideband is expensive though (to the tune of around $300).

yeah i was trying to avoid the $300 mark, and having to make another hole in my exhaust for the wideband 02 sensor

Do you want it tuned, or do you want it tuned correctly?

You don't need to cut another hole. You can put the wideband sensor in place of your stock sensor. Many (maybe all?) wideband oxygen sensor controllers have a simulated narrow-band output that you can feed to whatever still needs the narrow-band signal.

If you are running an E-Manage, you shouldn't even need the narrow-band.

It should be able to take full advantage of the wideband. I know most real standalone's can simply take advantage of the wideband sensor, and use it for some SUPER efficient closed look systems. Bonus feature is that fast standalone's can likely read the O2 sensor pretty quickly, so you can be in closed loop longer, which is better for just about everything. I would LOVE to have the system be fast enough to run closed loop at WOT. That would make things SO much more safe, I think.

But Vikash is right, the Wideband controller required to use the wideband O2 sensor, can lower the resoloution of the sensor to be compatable with anything that might need a stock narrow band setup.

this one. it has narow simulator. this is actualy the only ones that ive seen that has it. aem uego at least doesnt. the zitronic might but with display its a little more than the plx

I think no matter what, to do it right and accurate. A wideband from any company will cost us.

well it looks like the wideband controller is the expensive part.

a wideband sensor for the plx kit is only 70 dollars. while the kit is 300 w/out a display and 350 w/a display.

and the gauge converter for 45 dollars is the piece needed so you can use a narrow band gauge.

dont see the point of buying the converter though. a sensor and controller w/display is the same price as the sensor and controller w/out display and the converter when all is said and done. and then you still have to buy the gauge. unless this thing does something to make the stock ECU happy. and if it were that crucial you would think it would be part of the kit.
