Grip well, but slide when wanted, neutral handling. Seem to wear well and are quieter on the highway than the Falken 512s and Yokohamas I had. Good in the wet. Absolutely terrible in snow! I might as well be using drag slicks for the grip I get in these things. Worthless with a fwd car in the snow. I've never had so much trouble in a Subaru. Absolutely horrendous - rear drive V8s were going by me in the 12" storm we got. Couldn't even get home and I was lucky to be able to make it to my mother's. Think I took 30k miles off the transmission's life. These are 205 50 16s on Forester wheels.

But they're summer tires, you can't expect them to do well in the snow.

I had the 711's and the 712's on my maxima. Bad tires in general. The 711's were worse.
I say save up and get some Pirelli P Zero Nero's
They have been great in the snow, wet and they have handled some autocross abuse.
Remember, the only thing keeping your car on the road, is the tires you choose, so I say don't go cheap!

711's are supposed to be all-season. 712's are summer rubber.
I have the 712's and they are pretty fun in the snow. Cold road means breaking all 4 loose in 4th gear

D'oh! I thought I put this in the review forum. Grr.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry about them with AWD and in any other conditions than snow, they are pretty good. I find Pirellis and Michelins to be overpriced and I go through tires too quick to spend that much. I've never run Neros, but the three other Pirellis I had wore quickly. It would be cheaper for me to get a set of steel wheels and snow tires than two sets of Michelins or Pirellis. If I don't get to convert to AWD this summer, maybe I'll do just that. Anyway, for $53 from TireRack they're tough to beat. There are better tires that cost twice as much, but I don't think they're worth twice as much to me. Plus, with maybe 125 HP any more grip would make it unbearable to drive.

the 711 and 712 are both summer tires.

Oops, someone told me wrong then. They look sucky next to the 712's... so whatever they are, I'd just go with the 12's and some winter rims/tires.
Kuhmos are great for the price. Nothing spectacular, but they have decent stick and look cool

The other tires I've had have been summer tires, too and they were better. Still not the best, but I was able to move around with them. These are quieter, though, and the car can use whatever help there that it can get.

cant beat pep boys, $29.99/tire for all 15" all-season tires. plus, where else can you go and feel lucky to be treated like shit, since most of the time they just ignore you.

Their tires are round and black ... that's about all I can say for them. Made by name brands that were too embarrassed to put their name on them.

i do not have one bad thing to say about them, they have performed excellently in winter driving on several of my vehicles. embarrassment has nothing to do with the brand names not being on there. it has more to do with the fact some people are comfortable saving a little money for a product that performs the same but just doesnt have your favorite logo on it.
p.s. i just reread the whole thread and it doesnt exactly seem like you have any idea what you are talking about when it comes to tires anyway, since you are complaining that your summer tires dont work well in the snow. id guess my pep boys run circles around your kumhos in the snow, stroker ace.
and you dont need to spend $125 to get a decent summer tire, you just need to buy something other than a shitty kumho. dunlop makes the sport fm901 for around $80 and they are awesome summer hi-po treads.

My other summer tires have performed acceptably in the snow. These do not and that's the point. If you actually did read the whole thing you'd have seen that previously along with my statement in any conditions other than snow they are fine.
And I worked at Pep Boys, I can tell you that the tires are only good if you don't care about performance at all. The cheap ones you refer to have poor sidewall and shoulder reinforcement and cheap compounds. They'll get you there, but that's all I can say about them. There's cheap performance tires and then there's 0 performance tires. Pep Boys even sells retreaded tires from China, so don't talk about quality - those are probably the ones you have. Do they have lots of the little rubber needles coming off them?

well since you are not using them for their intended purpose, i imagine its pretty much a crapshoot how one summer tire works in the snow compared to the next, whats your point?
well in the winter, performance to me means good traction and predictable handling. thats what i have gotten. i never said anything about summer peformance tires.
and i thought my tires were made by name brand companies embarrassed to put their names on, not chinese retreads?

No whizzing contests about crappy tires from wherever.
Steve, as long as you know summer tires aren't made for when its under 40 degrees, then fine. What you do from there is up to you. All the other arguments are moot. The snow comment was just a side point anyways.
Everyone if they are smart will just get a 4x4 GL. Lose 800 lbs off the Legacy, lose the speed ratings and get a nice aggressive tire tread, lose the (relatively) wide tires - otherwise called sleds, and lose the 3 unlockable diffs and replace them with 2 that will. I can go places in my Wagon that any legacy without a lift could only dream. In fact everyday just to pull into my parking spot I just sit there with the car in 4wd high or low and let it crawl up a hill with sheer ice at about 1500 rpm. Its almost a surreal experience, just watching the car do all the work. But that's not the point of this discussion

The old Subarus were much better in the snow. Makes me long for the return of dual range.
The point is a review of the tire in all conditions. Don't use it in the snow? Good for you. If someone wants to know for curiosity or in the event that they may be travelling somewhere and worry about getting hit by a snow storm, then there they go - they suck in snow. There was more to the review, I just used stronger language with the snow part as I was pissed to have to sleep on my mother's couch. Case is closed.
Pep Boys has lots of tires. Some are cheap, some are not. Some are junk, some are decent. Some are made in China, some are not. The Chinese tires are in the $20-30 range and have Chinese characters on the sidewalls for easy ID. The better ones cost more than $29.99 or even $53.

I'd prefer an RX or XT
