Oh no....

When I was in Mexico, I saw several really really nice examples of lifted Jeeps.

It made me think back to the day I almost bought a Grand Cherokee, and I started to get nostalgic about what I wanted to do with the car and what my plans were.

I bought my 95 Legacy instead of getting a 94 Grand Cherokee Limited V8.

I had put it out of my mind (although not entirely, as you can tell by my handle).

Jeeps have always interested me. The one thing that got me started was a picture. In December of 2002, I signed up to a Jeep forum to try and see what was available and what I could do.

I saw this picture, and got stary-eyed. It was impressive, but not the most extreme Jeep on the site. It was something that looked to be everything that I was looking for in a Jeep. Something capable, with doors, and could be daily driven. It was hardcore, and seemingly legendary on the site.

I recently saw this picture again. 2 years after first seeing it, I remembered every detail. It was burned in my mind. Seeing it again, makes me want to put Project BC on hold, and go out and pick up a Project ZJ or XJ. I don't think I will, but seeing this picture tells me that I will one day own one.

I don't know if anyone else will see what I see in this picture, but here it is anyway.

Oh, this wasn't titled "oh no" because I'm going to give up the Legacy, it's titled that because now the thought of a jeep is back in my mind. If I ever got one, it would be co-inhabitating the garage with the Legacy. Me and my expensive hobbies, lol.

I think it's cool. The only reason I'm not into off roading more is that there's nowhere around here to go. I know a couple hot chicks who'd go nuts if they saw that thing.

It's a solid axle front coversion on a Grand.

My brother had crawled rocks for a long time, and i've been hanging out with him entirely too much recently.

I never was into it that much, but it's really not my thing now.

A good friend of mine is into all that Jeep stuff, he's got a 99 Cherokee lifted 3" I think and on 33's. He's already cut the fenders and ripped the bumper ends off of it, so it looks downright ugly to me. But what I really don't like is all the times I've had to help him fix stuff that he ruins when he goes in mudpits and stuff (from getting water in his distributor to toasting his alternator).

If you ask me, serious offroading is the #1 way to beat on your car. There's nothing more abusive you can do to it.

The Grand Cherokee has always had solid axles front and rear, up until the WK in 05. That's the first Grand Cherokee to have IFS, ever.

I think it would be a lot of fun to have something like that.

But I saw Vikash's brothers Supra today, and that thing is REALLY awesome. So maybe I'll stick with project CARS for now, lol.

I'd say driving to Moab and using a Suby Wagon loaded with spare parts/tools/bikes/camping gear as a support vehicle would be #1. The suby did pretty well, to the surprise of the people I was there with, held back mainly by the open F/R diffs...and ground clearance :D
My fictitious future garage will definitely have a CJ or old Land Cruiser project. :Disclaimer: This post influenced by Guinness

Phil. . . if you want to rock crawl, you really need either a CJ, YJ, or TJ to build up. Shorter wheelbases > * when it comes to traversing large rocks, etc. And if you want to trail the thing in the woods, anything wider than the YJs and TJs is going to be tough to squeeze onto those trails.

Hmmm. . . I wonder if we were both memebers of the same Jeep board back in 2002. I think I joined-up around April or May, though. :D

CJ's, YJ's, and TJ's are really common, built ZJ's aren't.

If I could, I'd build a WJ, but that would be so expensive.

I don't want anything serious, just something along the lines of D60's and ARB lockers, 35's, and 7.5" of RE lift. Actually, that's very similar to the setup above.

So that would defeat the purpose of bringing back my Jeep desires, eh?

By the way, you want something hard to work on, get a Jeep.

It's at least an hour affair just to get the alternator out of Cherokees...

looks like that xt6 has yota mini truck running gear? its got a 8" rear at least. cars on a 4x4 chassis is sooo redneck though.
not if but when I get a 4x4, it will probably be a pre 85 yota. one of the cheapest and best rigs to build. light weight, great aftermarket, decent gas milage. I'd like a samurai too, but theyre so small and underpowered. loads of fun of course, just not too practical for me.

Hello...

Some friends of mine here in Sweden drive Samurais, the most extreme one has a Rover V8 in it , chassi lifted about 8" and body lifted about 4" + 35's on it.

My little brother has a Toyota Landcruiser HJ60 from -85 which is chassilifted about 6" and he has AMR airlockers on it + 37.5's on. That one is a real monster in the forest.

He also has got a Subaru Brat on a IH Scout II chassi and Landcruiser axles, it has an AMC 360cui V8 and a TH700 transmission. This one is my favorite, its a major monster.

I will try to get some pics later on.
