... my check engine light came on.
Coincidence? Or is it that the ECU is missing the speed signal?
The speedo cable was making grinding noises recently on a few very cold mornings. The car seems to be running fine - albiet with the ~3000rpm hesitation.
So, what's next? A new speedo cable? For sure. Anything else?
HELP!

Pull the trouble code from the ECU and I'm sure you'll find it is code 33 for the vehicle speed sensor. The sensor is built into the speedometer.
Replacing the speedometer cable ought to be all you need. I think there are two separate parts of the cable and you most likely only need to replace the easy-to-reach part... try doing a search for more info; my memory's vague.

It's probably the speedo cable base piece.
Pull the cable off the base, and make sure the cable is still in one piece. If so, pull the base piece off. Make sure to get the metal washer & rubber piece.

if i can recall correctly - you will be on a limp mode or something similiar? (rev limits at 4k).
The lower bit of speedo cable is rather expensive....
