Friday my girlfriend bought a 91ss w/150K for 1750, we get the car home saturday and the awd is not working, when i was driving the car home it didn't give any signs that it wasn't working but there was no snow or anything to test it in, I was looking through the glove compartment and found receipts that indicated the car had had about 2k worth of transmission work less than 10K ago what should i do

should i go back to the car lot i got it from and take the car back, even though it was sold asis i paid w/credit card and that gives me some buyer protection. btw i searched the board and found some other people had this problem and it turned out to be worn center diff clutches or duty c soleniod, how do i change those? where are they? thanks damon. ps, the car is auto

I had a similar problem w/ my old 91 SS. Had the trans rebuilt and the AWD never worked right again. This was at about 170K for mine.

so what did you end up doing?

Is the power light flashing at all when starting or driving?
The AWD system is in the rear extension housing, and can be pulled off the tranny without removing it.
So I guess it's up to you whether you want to start digging into it, or just take it back.

Check to see if the FWD fuse is inserted.

the power light comes on when you first start the car, stays on for a few seconds and goes out, the manual function works fine, i was gonna check for that awd fuse but it's too cold, besides, the awd comes and goes, it seems when you go from a dead stop it doesn't work until you get moving, it kinda feels like it does when you have a clutch that slips, tommorow i'm gonna take it in and see if there are any codes and i'll go from there, if there arent any codes i'll buy a couple bottles of that lucas transmission stuff and put it in. btw will that duty c solenoid cause a code? will they be able to tell anything about that power light by checking codes? thanks for all the responses. damon

That should take care of it.. it's pretty simple, if you just follow the instructions.. I've done it NUMEROUS times.
You can even pul your ECU codes, in D-Check mode, as your car still drives.

what does the manual button on the 4eat shifter do?

It doesn't allow the transmission to shift into 1st gear. It only works with the selector in 2 or 3.
