Fuel Pump dead, full tank of gas ... Help!

I've just confirmed my fuel pump is dead. Yep, I read all the related topics but I am convinced the pump is toast. Big problem though, I tried to siphon out all the gas (which I just filled) and there seems to be something to prevent the hose going in all the way. Anybody run into this? How did you deal with it? I'll try to find a Walbro 340 (255lph) or similar to replace it. Anybody know who carries it in the GTA (or better yet close to Whitby, Ont?). First things first though...lowering the tank, preferably empty.

I have a wagon and the pump is accessed via a cover under the luggage area carpet above the tank. You should be able to replace it with the gas in it, if I'm not mistaken.

Isn't the fuel pump under the car, not in the tank?

Ok,
I found the access cover and have successfully removed the fuel pump, sender assembly. No need to yank the tank.
Next step is to find a suitable replacement that doesn't cost $400 and change. Looks like I'm going to have to wait until Monday though.

I benched tested the pump and it ran ... I put it back in the tank and the car fired right up. I tried another start and no go. Tried again and again... no go. I installed a jumper across the relay contacts to keep the pump on while I scoot back and check for 12vdc at the connector. It was there. I tapped the pump cover with a screwdriver and it fired right up. Any time the car didn't start the first time tapping the cover got the pump working. Sounds like a bad spot on the commutator or maybe the brushes are all but done. Anyway, I changed the pump out with a UAP replacement. I suspect I'll live to regret this move but a Walbro was over $250.00 and a Supra TT pump was $800.00 at UAP. I chose the cheapest at $160.00. The car seems fine but doesn't seem to have the same balls of fire. Time to tinker some more maybe. Thank you for all the replies lads.

Have you guys checked the the wires under the seat, passenger side? I had the same problem. It was a connector. Mine was so bad that as we tried to start it and wiggled the wires under the seat you could see sparks inside the connector. Let me get the post for ya. I ended up cutting the wires and making new connectors for them. My car hasn't died since.
Although you mentioned tapping the cap, That's probably a sign that the pump is going bad, even if it works sometimes.
