i have a 94 legacy l and am thinkin about a turbo upgrade. i wanted to know if i was stupid for wanting this on an auto tranny, or would it be worth the time to do it.

does the turbo bolt onto any part of the engine? or does it stay attached by piping?

i did a search but couldnt find anything. any help appreciated

thanks

I'd normally hit ya with a search stick, again, but I'll try and answer your questions.

Auto trannys and turbo's mix well. The fastest WRX in Amercia is a auto. As for the turbo, the turbo has a few parts to it. The headers, which connect to the upipe, which is on the passenger side. The turbo sit's on that pipe. From there the air is brought into the turbo via your air box, then pushed back out on the compressor side into your throttle body though a tube. The headers now come into play. They send the exhaust gases though the turbine via the header into the uppipe or hot side of the turbo to the downpipe, which is bolted to the back of the turbo. From there, it emptys out the back into the muffler.

that and if you do a swap instead of a kit youll need to get the front crossmember in order to do it. for more info on swaps just look up the swaps section/aftermarket forced induction at nasioc.com

There is also a bracket that attaches the turbo to the block.

What I think you're getting at is turbo'ing an NA. It's not a good idea. The turbos are good engines because they're closed-deck blocks. The NAs are only semi-closed. See what I'm getting at? The turbos also have oil squirters in the oil galleys that keep the whole deal cool and running. I'm not saying it can't be done, but you're going on a half-life if you do, and you're not going to be able to push a helluva lotta boost. --which is what you want, right? Becuase you will never have enough.

Douglas seems to have had relatively good results with supercharging his n/a engine, I dont see how turboing it would be all that different. He did have to rebuild the engine tho. You might talk to him and see what you need to watch out for since he should have a really good grasp on it.

The N/A engine is open deck, not semi closed. The main problem with FI on an N/A engine IMO is more the high compression it runs.

No there isn't. There's a bracket holding the uppipe to the block. The turbo just sits on the uppipe.

the uppipe should already have the bracket on it.

You don't NEED the bracket, but I'd use it.

Mine is just bolted to the head, and is no longer bolted to the block since that bolt is a bitch to get to with the engine in the car.

LOL. I really wonder what the purpose of that bracket could possibly be.

Well, the bracket does support some of the turbo's weight. Just not directly.

lets put it this way no bracket after a long time lets say 50thousand ks and you will be byeing new oil lines going to the turbo. if you race your motor and you dont have this bracket then the life spane of the oil line gets worse. i no i whent threw 2 oil lines till my dad slap me and siad wheres the bracket that gos to the turbo.

You're talking about the oil supply line, right? The one on top of the turbo with a banjo fitting?
