The N/A 2.2L engine in the rally car still amazes me how it can take a rally beating and drive to work on Monday!

Ever since I purchaced the car it has always made tap tap tap sound when cold,sort of sounds like something is loose and rattling around! But once warmed up the noise is very slight and sometimes not even there.Oil pressure is 75lbs at about 3500rpm and 30lbs at idle when hot.

So anything to worry about ,get a back up engine? or just run till she blows?

My engine does the same tapping, don't know what it is though. I think everyone's does and no one seems too worried about it. As long as it's not air in your valves then I wouldn't worry about it.

Valves tap tap tapping?

That's what I've heard --Subies always have had loose -er valves than other cars, so the sound is more prominent. Lately, mine's been a bit louder, too, but methinks the new tranny is still working out it's other things.. not sure though. I'd have to have someone listen to it.
Also replace the VCs, too.. that may help.

It's the lifters. They are small, so I think they easily get air. I find synthetic helps as I've had little to no problem with two engines (one with 246k).

..but that's not what we said.. ? Why not just attempt to solve the problem?

I sort read it as Suby's make this noise so don't worry.I know I should fix it but that means pulling the engine and then finding other things?? I just wanted to find out how much time I've got before she blows! Anyway this engine has done some miles/rallies and has leaking valve seals.So I plan to get another engine rebuild it while the other one is still going and just do a weekend swap.

What are VC's??? a medal called the Victoria Cross??
