Rev limit of EJ22T heads

I recently aquired a MY93 EJ22T long block. I plan to port the stock heads.

I was wondering how high the stock valve springs can hold before valve float? I plan to have a 8500rpm rev capability. Redline will be set at 8000, but I want it to be able to rev to 8500 at times in come corners when at the track.

Thanks!
sorry....I didn't search.

The hydraulic lifters will more then likely be your limiting factor before valve springs.

However at 8000 rpm....I don't think either would be working too well.

shit, meng.. 8k? Why? why?

Easier to hold gears through corners than shifting twice... still faster even with falling horsepower levels. And safer with less suspension load transfers.

it is widely accepted that hydraulic lifters lose accuracy above 6500 rpm, and probably won't work at all above 7000 rpm. that is why high rpm engines have solid lifters. the price you pay for high performance, you have to adjust the valves.

nice springs should get you to 7000 rpm but I doubt the power above 6500 will be very robust.

no way the stock con rods, pistons and valves can do above 8,000, everything is too heavy for that reciprocating speed. it'll go boom

The stock heads arent worth porting IMO.

Since youre doing the work to P&P, why not put in the proper equipment to rev? Springs and cams aren't that expensive...

The springs are pretty soft too, esp the likely 100k old ones- might as well replace them anyway. I'd guess they're good to 6800 or so. 8500rpm is a lot, and i hope you dont blow stuff up.

The cams are pretty tough as mine with 246k looked absolutely brand new. However, I can't see them allowing the engine to breathe at that speed and if your turbo runs out of breath at that rpm, I don't think you could reach it. The engine will really have to be optimized for the higher rpm at the sacrifice of lower speed performance. This is why they have variable valve timing in things.

I'd also not want to run the stock pistons that high, though I'd maybe be willing to take a chance with the rods.

High revs big power=turbo Wenkel

Good torque, traction=Subaru

I'm going to get Forged JE pistons. The turbo setup will be Secton 8's STi turbo kit. That consists of the Garrett GT30R w/ external wastegate.

If the EJ22T heads don't do me good, I might have to get Either SOHC 2.5RS heads, or the phase 1 DOHC, with some jun cams maybe.

Shotting for 400whp. The turbokit can get me 500whp if I wanted, but I'm, just shooting for 400.
