Basically, you get a set of maps, clues to where checkpoints are, and the time to be at each checkpoint. The goal is to cross the timing hose at each CP on the exact 1/100 of a minute. If you do this, you get a zero for the leg. Every 1/100 off gets you one point.
There are also standoffs and course controls and stuff you have to go to, to gain more information about upcoming CPs, or to find a piece of information and turn it in at the next cp. We did pretty damn well, and are moving out of the beginner class for the next rally, which will be an 8 hour rally starting in Santa Barbara, CA. I'd say there were about 45 cars at yesterday's rally. We got 2nd in our class, losing by 3 points with a total score of 7. I need more practice crossing timing hoses. We still get trophies, though!
This rally lasted about 6 hours, and covered around 190 miles.

I sort of might have come close to sliding into that red Cobra in a tighter than expected blind corner with dirt all over the road when it was going the other way. Got the adrenaline going, for sure.

A WRX I kept up with for awhile. He was also supposed to be 4 cars (and 4 minutes) ahead of us.
A nice, scenic drive though the hills in sunny Southern California. Oh yeah and also I hit 90mph a few times.
A lot of people were way early for checkpoint four. We were there about 20 min before we needed to be. The cp is right around the corner from here, so a bunch of cars were stopped, waiting. That new Porsche 997 Carrera S was the one car that was actually late and shouldn't have stopped. I guess they had trouble telling time or something.
I took some video, which turned out pretty good. I don't really have the software or patience to sift through 40 min of footage to make a little 5 minutes clip at the moment. Maybe some day, along with some other random video we shot back home during the summer. Here's my camera setup; a cheap tripod with some bungee cords and the center seatbelt holding it in place. It works pretty well. Bonus STi in the background. There were 6 or 7 there I'd say.
