a couple of you have stated how unhappy you are w/the current state of affairs in the world of children's toys. if you are going only by what you see advertised it would seem all is lost.
rest easy all is not lost.
yes, the bratz toys are crap and i never see them move off the toyshelves so i dont think they are going to be around too long.
fisher price still makes little people. and they are great my 2 1/2 year loves them and so do i.
she has a cool castle w/princesses and knights and horses and a dragon.
i just bought us the hotwheels g-force loop and jump and several feet of extra track (my wife is not too happy about this purchase). she is very excited to make the car jump. this is the one w/the c-clamp and as the name implies relies on gravity alone. no launcher.
the barbies (god i never thought i would say this) are pretty cool. she is more of a hero figure than before. she doesnt need saving.
there are tons of learning/imagination toys. just today at TRU i saw a huge selection of wooden blocks and houses that do absolutely nothing. its all up to your imagination. they still make lincoln logs and the erector set stuff is damn cool. you can build a chopper.
then there is the whole leap pad line. wow. those things are amazing. you can get spiderman comics for them!
i am a bit dissapointed w/the Lego selection though. they arent marketed to be as free form as they used to be. but of course you can still build whatever you want. i dont think you cant just buy a huge bucket of lego any more.
and dont forget tranformers are back. the new alternator line is some of the best transformer stuf i have seen ever.
but god do i hate the card game crap. but kids love it so...
you ever hear of hero clix?
awesome game that has miniature marvel and DC super heroes to fight with. almost like role playing and chess combined but not as much prep work involved as role play.

look on ebay and at garage sales for the legos. a lot of people get rid of an entire lego collection from their kids, that should have some good stuff. Im kinda bummed that my parents just threw all my legos out. and I had a TON of legos. would have liked to give them to my kids.

My kids have alot of leap frog learning toys....and some tools of mass destruction.
We discovered that we can re-introduce them to their toys and it is like christmas again. We take the toys they don't play with too often and stick them in the garage, then in a a few weeks we bring them out. This way they don't get all toghter bored with them.
we also freecycle many toys too.
www.freecycle.org (you can get free cars too) I saw a house on there not too long ago.

Wow. Didn't know I upset some of you and your allegiance to the bratz dolls.
..sick bastids.
Kids toys are great, if you ask me. Occasionally, I'll even bring back the old movies I used to watch.. pop in a VHS, and let Winnie The Pooh tell me a story.
..then naptime.
We're all on the same page.. just as long as it's a REAL book, and not that leap-pad thing, mmmkay?

we ground up 800,000 lb. of Legos here this year...we had to sign a release saying we wouldn't sell them, just destroy them
the temptation to bag them and sell them on eBay was great

More plastic for civic parts, gauges, neons, and bratz dolls.

obsolete Legos. they mold them in Denmark and package them in Connecticut, so when a particular piece is not needed anymore, they pile up. Then they sell them to someone like us.
we made a killing on the recycled plastic, so 91legacy_sleeper is quite correct

That's why Lego should stop selling so many overpriced specific sets. I have a huge bag waiting for my nephew. Those and a couple of realistic looking guns (before they made them all in gay colors) were the best toys I had. The go cart would be on the list but for the fact that I could hardly drive it.

My kids aren't old enough to read yet so leap from toys help them for when they will be able to... at least we don't do the prissy baby einstien crap.

baby einstein can be very usefull at times. got one as a gift and never watched it in nearly 3 years. tried it last week. i was at my wits end w/my 1 year old and 2 1/2 year old. calmed the little monsters right down.

I'm going to market muzzles and choke chains for kids. Maybe reduced power child-safe tazers, too. That would be for parents. For kids I'll sell toys that look like knives and other objects they shouldn't touch and stick-on fake electric outlets.
I have no idea how you people do it. I guess I'm just not a kid person (I didn't even like kids when I was one). Non-stop screaming, like my sister's caulicey (sp) baby was make me understand shaken baby syndrome or those religious freaks who drown their kids because they think they're the devil. When I watch that Supernanny show at my sister's I just keep suggesting the time honored 'back hand' to get them back in line. I'd be much better with a daughter, but either way it's a good thing I'll never have a kid. You people have my respect (I don't say that of all 'parents', but you people all seem good).

I'm 28 and have 5 kids. 3 boys and 2 girls. They don't all live with me though. Just my two boys with my wife.
Sure they make me angry sometimes but it is at those times we have to realize we made these youngins and if we want them to grow up to be outstanding citizens, we need to be calm and level headed so we do not drive them into a lake. IF that fails...get the belt. J/K.
I'll tell you right now. Once you find out your G/F , wife is pregnant your whole life changes...some good, some bad. Once you actually have the baby and bond with him/her you become more sympathetic to other parents and other children. You will hear a little baby screaming and you start to think that their parents should be shot. You start to wonder why the baby is crying and why their parent won't remedy the problem. You cry when you hear of children of any age getting, sick, injured or killed.
Or maybe it's just me.

I think it's most people. I lack that instinct entirely. I don't need to get too far into it, but if any FUCKING agent ever reads my book and gets it to an editor who wants something other than sassy 30-something single broads in NY crying because their egocentric personalities don't get them the selfless men they claim to want, you can read all about it as the main character is 99% me.

A favorite of mine was a really nice replica of a tommy gun that my dad made from oak. he was a cabinet maker, and has waaay too much hardwood/rare cuts in storage. when I was in cub scouts he helped my troop make about 20 toy jeeps from scratch out of maple and we gave them to salvation army. I also used to love little die-cast farm equipment. I would cut them up and make different things for them. homemade toys are the best.

unfortunately yes, when she has sen them all too many times to count.
i cant wait for it to be nice enough to take them outside.
we live off of a soccer field and a park. cant wait to play outside. our townhouse is beginning to feel VERY small.

It is about 75 degrees and sunny here today. We have a soccer field behind us with a big ole playground too. There is also a brand new, huge palyground at the kids daycare. Not a lack of things to do...it just rains too damn much.
Sometimes they land the rescue helicoptor in the middle of the feild....that is something to see. It's sad that anyone has to ride in their (injured) but it is cool to see the preperation that goes on before it lands.
MY oldest has a bigfoot powerwheels he likes to 4wheel in the empty lot next door.
