Front CV axles R/R procedure

I'm not sure who originally suggested it, but they are shiat.

Loosening the front bolt of the lower control arm and front sway bar gives you enough room to slide the axle off the transmission stub so you can remove it without messing up the alignment.

I probably had the one axle off in less then 30 minutes, which included jacking the car up and all that jazz.

The axle was oozing grease onto the exhaust. The cause, the metal plug at the end of the axle was not secure. CVaxles.com sent me another axle, however it is not the same axle, so I've got to try and get another axle from them. Sent them an email, but I'll be calling them in the morning.

I still say pop the balljoint out of the knuckle.

cvaxles.com has a reputation to uphold. They should wait on you hand and foot if you give 'em hell.

yes, just remove the bolt that secure the balljoint to the knuckle, grab a prybar and pop it out. It'll swing out of the way and you can do whatever you want with it :)

That's a little easier said then done if things are old and rusted.

it helps to get a chisel to wedge in the space the pinch bolt is closing up around the ball joint.

and pry from the front of the car not the side. it is much easier that way.

a cv axle should take about 15 minutes to swap start to finish when you get it figured out. thats how long the second one took. the first took an hour untill i figured out i should pry from the front.

depending on how long the bar is it's quite easy. A 3footer should do the trick.

It was a piece of cake (other than getting the brass nut off) to swap the drive shaft on the passenger's side without seperating the ball joint by putting the transmission end in first while the steering wheel was turned to the right. I can't say anything about the driver's side. You can leave the two bolts on the strut in place as well. Note that I didn't have the big plastic fender cover/insert in at the time, and I don't know if it would normally be in the way or not.
