Sloppy connection?

Well I pulled apart my console today and ripped out the shifter. I know i need a new tension spring but it wont be here until Next wednesday.

When I was underneath my car, I noticed that the connection between the transmission and the linkage was loose. Is it supposed to be loose?

I can litteraly take it and move it a good 3 or 4 cm in both directions. Should i tighten it up? In each gear there is an inch and a half of play in the shifter knobb and i dont know if thats whats causing it or the lack of the tension spring.

ANy help would be great.

There isnt a damn page in my Chiltons book about the shifter assembly. WTF that seems like more important then how to remove the carpet.

Everything should be snug.

If you mean there is a lot of play at the plate where the tension spring mounts, then yes, you should tighten that up until it's solid.

I replaced that bushing with a modded Energy Shifter bushing, and built a custom rear bushing.

That is a LOT of play in each gear! 1.5"? Jesus. I think I have MAYBE .5" at the max.

The tension spring is just the return-to-center spring. I don't know how that can really go bad? It's never stretched more than a few mm.

return-to-center springs do wear out. right now mine is weak so I'm going to get in there pretty soon, and drop in the Energy bushing as well

Well when i got down to look underneath my car the tension spring was not ruined, it was GONE!

I dont know what happened. No I mean the Spot where the shifter connects to the transmission.

The piece that if you did the wrx swap you would have to order for 40 bucks. That is what is really loose. And i did replace the crappy stock bushing with an energy bushing.
