EJ22 NA on boost... what should I be aware of

ok, so I got bored about two weekends ago and I took the old stock turbo off my 7M powered Toyota supra and stuck it on my 90 Wagon. Everything's hooked up and it runs pretty good. I used the stock Supra intercooler too and an Audi S4 BOV I had sittin around.

The thing pulls pretty strong. I haven't been able to run WOT yet as I still need to hook up the wastegate actuator (it's wired shut right now). I had to clock the turbo so I need to build a plate to bolt it to. If I mash the throttle I'll get about 10 PSI of boost but unfotunatly the clutch won't hold that at all. A few times I got some ping when getting into it hard, but there's still 87 octane in the tank, so we'll see what it will take with some high test. Right now it will hold about 5-6 psi before the clutch lets go.


My question is, what kind of isssues might I run into running this engine on pressure? What level of power can the injectors support? How much boost are these things known to take with stock bottom ends before they start eating pistons? Should I bother putting the Supra fuel pump in?

Dude, put some premium in the fuel tank!

The stock injectors' limits are somewhere around 160 or 170 horsepower.

You may as well stick the Supra fuel pump in... the stock NA pump probably isn't going to be too happy supplying the higher pressures you need.

An RRFPR may be called for.

The most important issues you'll run into would be engine management issues, I'd say. The fueling stuff is obvious from what I've written above. But also, your stock ECU's giving you a lot more spark advance than you should have. Running pig rich with premium fuel might offset that enough to make things work though.

Is this the CT-26? I thought the CT-26 wastegate actuator was set to around 7 psi.

I'd really like to see those pictures. :)

yeah, some high octane petrol is on the way once I take it out again, this thing was the winter car, but the Jag and the bike are back in action and severly missed, so the scoobs been sitting mostly since the operation :)

is there an AFPR that will bolt in the stock location or just hook up to the stock fuel rail easily? I've been thinking about how to do that, a rising rate unit is needed no doubt.

Yeah , it's a CT-26 and the stock actuator is about 6 -7 psi, but there is no actuator right now, the WG is wired shut until I build a bracket to mount the actuator on, so boost is currently only limited by my right foot :D

here's a pic of it before it was done, I'll get some with the IC and all on soon.

It should be pretty easy to plumb an RRFPR with 5/16" hose barbs into the fuel return line near the driver's side strut tower.

Oh, you couldn't get the actuator on after reclocking, I get it. Yeah... my car would be toast if my right foot were the only thing limiting boost. :)

That picture looks way cool. That's about the orientation I expected to see it in... Kind of like the "twisted turbo" setups people sometimes do.

How did you fabricate the exhaust piping?

You will need to upgrade your 270 cc injectors to the 370 cc injectors. Upgrade the fuel pump, run premium or better (I run 92 plus a gallon of 114 tolulene). You may have to trick your MAF sensor on high boost over 4000 rpm or then the bigger injectors may flow too much, maybe, depends upon boost, I am only boosting at 7 psi.

the whole thing was done with spare parts I had sitting around, the only think I bought was some copper Ts to hook up the coolant lines, though I'll have to replace those with something better (hardware store special :p )

the exhaust is a divorced downpipe setup, I run 2.5" off the turbine and 1.5" off the wastegate complete with a divider. I'll snap some pics next time I'm under the car. I had to order up some manifold gaskets because I'm just running high temp silicone right now and it already leaks. Since I have to replace those I'll be under the car soon. The dump tube is pretty cool, it kicks out right behind the passenger's tire design specificaly to scare unknowing pedestrians when boost comes on :D

The biggest PIA was making the oil return line to the oil pan.

Hehehehee, that's so awesome that you just stuck the intercooler over on the side there. Are you gonna put some kind of scoop in that side of the hood?

You'll probably want to work in a return bung for the blowoff valve... The mass-air ECU doesn't do well with the unmetered air it lets in especially at idle. And unfiltered air isn't desirable either.

Yeah I gotta agree, I like that IC setup. Short piping, simple and making use of spare space. What are your plans for scoops and air filters? Maybe just a vent from under the wheel or through the grill?

I plan to cut a scoop in the hood for the IC

venting the BOV to atmosphere is fine because I'm running the AFM in blow through mode. The BOV is before the AFM so the ECU never sees the loss of air. Notice the air flow meter sitting after the BOV right before the TB :D

Oh, I missed the MAF sensor being on the intercooler outlet... As far as I know nobody's actually tried the blow-through setup on our cars yet except for you. That's cool that it seems to work okay.

The CT26 is actually not that big a turbo. Not that this exactly specifies it, but the 7MGTE only made about 30 more horsepower at about 7 psi than the non-turbo 200hp 7MGE.

for a stock turbo the CT-26 is pretty big. It's a 45mm wheel and flows enough air where I made just over 300rwhp at 15psi on the 3 liter 7M with it and mostly stock componenets. There are people that have pushed this thing to the 320 or so rwhp range. Not bad at all for a stock single that's design is 20 years old :D stick this next to a stock scoobie turbo and it looks enormous :)

Hehe, yeah, I didn't mean to say it was small or anything... just that it wasn't that inappropriate for an EJ22. My brother and I put a CT-26 on the 6M swapped into his MkII and it was very impressive.
