Are all 4EATs the same?

I just bought a '92 SS (turbo) with a bad 4EAT, it was gonna be a engine donor but its in good enough shape I might fix it. Will any AWD auto work? Are they all 3.90 ratios? What years?

Thanks
Gary

I found a guy selling an AT out of '95 Legacy wagon... will it fit?

Wiring issues?

the 95 autos had 4.111 I believe. Wiring should be ok.....you'd need a matching rear diff.

I thought I heard somewhere that the ss tranny's had stronger internals. I believe it was shot peened gears or something like that. I could be wrong

Can the front diff be swap without tearing down the whole tarnny? From thr pics I've seen the front section looks like a separate piece. Will the '92 3.9 diff go into the '95?

The turbo legacy AT's are a little more beefy. They have additional clutch packs to hold power, however I think a normal 4EAT should work fine.

Yes the diff & trans can be separated, however I don't have any experience with that.

yes, thats what i did with my tranny when i broke it, i used the 96 AT "front section" and the 96 AT rear diff (4.11). you will have to take the pinion shaft out (turns the front diff) and change it because it has a different amount of teeth than the 4.11. to take out the pinion shaft you have to pull off the back cover of the tranny, take off the gear that is bolted to the back of the pinion shaft, unbolt the 4 bolts in the front of the tranny holding the pinion shaft in, and pull it out. there will be a ring on the end of the shaft that you dont want to lose. you will need 1 new gasket (for the back cover) and you have to scrape clean the surface which is a HUGE pita because the gasket never wants to come off. then you just assemble in reverse order.

I found a '90 or '91 4EAT from a legacy wagon, should be a straight bolt in with a 3.9 ratio, right?

You talking about swapping diffs? Or just bolting it up?

The 90-91 4eat had 4.111 final drive ratio.

For some reasion I was thinking the N/A 4EAT were 3.9s, so I'd still have to swap diffs (front or rear).

Apparently there may be an incompatibility with the speed sensor on the ’95 and later trans… its electronic while the ’94 and earlier use one in the cluster driven off the speedo cable. Does the ’95+ 4EAT not have a speedo cable at all? Can it be modified to use one?

the part where the speed sensor screws in is interchangeable between mechanical and electrical. all you have to do is unscrew the electric speed sensor and screw in the mechanical speed sensor off of your old tranny. it screws in on the left side of the tranny if your facing it from the front.

Just trying to squeeze this thread for a little bit more info...

4eat Turbo transmission is stronger than the N/A 4eat?

5mt Turbo transmission is stronger than the N/A 5mt?

There is a little bit of contradiction in this thread about it, and that is my main concern right now...

Also, Does anyone think that putting a N/A 5mt in a turbo sedan is really a waste of time? Will it be totally shredded in a year, or ????

Bottom line is the factory did a few extra things to improve the longevity of the components that went into the turbo legacy.

The 4EAT got a few more clutch packs then the n/a models. The 5MT, it's gears were shot-peened.

Just little things. In all actuality, you'd be fine putting an n/a 5mt in a turbo legacy of stock form.

The main drawback of the n/a 5MT is the clutch design, but with a beefier pressure plate & clutch, you should be fine.
