noise from suspension

This just started today. Everytime I go over a bump I get a knocking noise from the suspension (I'm guessing its the suspension) on the front right. My guess is that the bushes have gone. If this is the problem, has anyone had a go at replacing them? Is it a difficult job? Before the knocking sound started I noticed that if I'm stationary or moving slow when parking and turning the wheel, I can hear a noise coming from the wheel but its hard to describe the sound (kind of like a loud rubbing sound of rubber on cement) I noticed that this sound got worse today once the knocking sound started.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Mark

First I'd take a look and make sure no fasteners have come loose. On one of my Legacies the strut top nut came loose and caused similar symptoms. My brother (who had the car at the time) just took it to the nearest shop and had them torque it down with an impact wrench really quick.

Hi vrg3,
Thanks for the feedback. I will go visit my local mechanic and get it all sorted out.

Also, check your CV boot to make sure it's not torn and lots of dirt has made its way to your CV joint.

Another thing I'd check very closely is your tie rod knuckle. It also has a small boot on it full of grease where it's hinged to the upper control arm (at least on most vehicles.) This may explain why you hear it when you turn the wheel.

Something else I would check would be the tightness of the bolts holding your tophat to the chassis. If those bolts are loose, then the whole assembly might be moving up and down (or shifting) when you go over a bump, or even turn the wheel enough.
